Job Summary:

The University of Delaware seeks a highly organized and detail-oriented Marine Science Laboratory Coordinator to support the research efforts of the School of Marine Science. This is a unique opportunity to work in a dynamic laboratory environment, collaborating with faculty and students to advance our understanding of marine geology and related fields.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Assist in the preparation and maintenance of laboratory equipment, including multibeam echosounders, ADCPs, and other geophysical instruments.
  • Participate in fieldwork, including geophysical surveys and boat operations, as needed.
  • Help instruct students and visiting scientists on laboratory techniques and procedures.
  • Apply standard laboratory methods to accomplish research assignments, including grain size analysis and organic extractions.
  • Prepare and process hydrodynamic and geophysical data for analysis.
  • Record experimental procedures, measurements, observations, and results of tests.
  • Present project results to the Principal Investigator and/or other members of the research group.
  • Maintain necessary records for reports.
  • Assist in the preparation of scientific reports, publications, and proposals.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree with two years of experience in laboratory work or the equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Experience with grain size laboratory techniques for both cohesive and non-cohesive sediments.
  • In-depth knowledge of laboratory techniques, procedures, instrumentation, and principles.
  • Highly organized, quick learner, and ability to work independently and with a team.
  • Proficient in the use of computers and basic office software applications.
  • Ability to implement assigned projects, analyze information, and draw conclusions.
  • Ability to work independently from written and oral instructions.
  • Ability to train and instruct others.
  • Ability to work well with faculty and students.
  • Ability to communicate effectively and interact well with people of all ages and diverse backgrounds.
  • Ability to collect, process, and interpret geophysical data, including AUV side-scan, underwater color images, multibeam sonar, and hydrodynamic wave and current sensors.

Special Requirements:

  • Ability to lift up to 50 lb. with or without assistance.
  • USCG small boat handling certificate or ability to obtain such qualification.
  • Ability to operate vehicles towing trailer/boat.
