Position Overview:
Under the guidance of the Anatomic Pathology Laboratory Manager, the Senior Histology Supervisor will aid in overseeing the daily functions of the Histology Lab by providing operational leadership and direction to staff and activities within the histology department.
The Senior Histology Supervisor is accountable for strategizing, assigning, reviewing, delegating, and assessing the work of assigned personnel to ensure quality testing outcomes and operational efficiency while complying with established policies and standard operating procedures.
This role includes maintaining a daily staffing schedule to ensure the department is sufficiently staffed for specimen volume and managing the department's equipment and supply inventory.
The Senior Histology Supervisor collaborates with laboratory leadership to address technical, operational, system, and other related challenges promptly. Takes necessary corrective actions when required.Oversees and executes all phases of routine surgical pathology specimen preparation for microscopic evaluation, including tissue processing, embedding, microtomy, frozen sectioning, H&E staining, basic tissue grossing, and immunohistochemistry.
The Senior Histology Supervisor communicates effectively with various personnel, including administrative, medical, nursing, and others, to ensure proper coordination and understanding of services in the absence of the laboratory manager and director.
Key Responsibilities:
- Demonstrates the ability to plan and organize workflow to enhance productivity while maintaining quality, safety, and customer satisfaction.
- Ensures team members adhere to departmental policies/procedures and comply with all quality, safety, and regulatory standards/requirements.
- Supports the department by monitoring regulatory/accreditation compliance and takes appropriate actions to address deficiencies.
- Trains new team members, current staff, and students as necessary. Ensures that orientation and training checklists are completed.
- Ensures that annual mandatory education is completed, and competencies are assessed and documented.
- Provides feedback to leadership regarding team members' performance, including the need for coaching, counseling, or disciplinary action.
- Assists leadership in completing initial and annual performance evaluations.
- Recommends/assists with the preparation of departmental quality and safety programs, performance improvement initiatives, and miscellaneous projects as needed.
- Participates in the interview process and provides feedback on candidates.
Qualifications:
Three years of histology experience in a clinical environment is required. Excellent communication skills are essential.
Advanced technical and operational skills and proficiency in conducting competency training in all aspects of automated and manual testing, instrument maintenance, and troubleshooting in the pathology laboratory.
Experience with College of American Pathologists inspection and/or preparation is required.Education:
- Associate of Science in Histotechnology is required; a bachelor's degree in medical technology, or in a physical, chemical, biological, or clinical laboratory science is preferred.
- Histotechnician or Histotechnologist certification HT or HTL (ASCP) is required; Qualification in Immunohistochemistry, QIHC (ASCP) is a plus.
