Job Summary

The Certified Athletic Trainer - Sports Medicine Specialist will be responsible for managing the health care of participating athletes, including first aid/emergency care, on-site injury evaluation, and medical referrals. This position will provide athletic training services for all sport-related events in accordance with current contracts.

Key Responsibilities
  • Perform injury prevention, recognition, assessment, treatment, and reconditioning of athletic injuries as set forth by the NATA Board of Certification.
  • Cover assigned practices, sports games, or matches and related events under the supervision of the team physician and/or program manager.
  • Develop treatment programs, including indicated modalities, therapeutic exercises, and strength and conditioning programs, in accordance with findings of evaluations and goals established by the injury assessment or by the treating physician.
  • Prepare athletes for treatment and ensure comfort and safety of athletes. Carry out all prescribed treatments and recommendations by the team/program/event physician.
  • Assess athletes' status in response to treatment and modify programs as appropriate. Refer athletes for appropriate diagnostic and follow-up procedures and subsequent injury tracking.
  • Coordinate follow-up treatment/appointments with physician office manager and/or Rehab scheduling team and ensure immediate access to services.
  • Inform athlete and families of important aspects of athletes' present condition, including concussion, wound care, first aid, and follow-up care. Inform physician and program manager of any necessary documentation or observable signs that need investigation.
  • Communicate with athletes, parents, athletic director(s), coaches, and physicians regarding athletes' playing status and ability to return to competition. All communication must be conducted within the bounds of confidentiality.
  • Demonstrate proper taping, strapping, bracing, and fitting of athletic equipment.
  • Use assigned athletic training equipment safely and efficiently.
  • Maintain athletes' medical records and relevant paperwork, including statistics and injury logs as established.
  • Work confidently in crisis or emergency situation, demonstrating knowledge of safety practices.
  • Organize pre- and post-participation physicals.
  • Participate in select community service/educational programs related to sports medicine.
  • Assist in program development related to sports medicine. Assist with on-boarding process for all new contracts. Assist with creating and maintaining relevant statistics to ensure program growth and success.
  • Demonstrate interpersonal skills required to work effectively with players, coaches, and other team personnel.
  • Demonstrate knowledge of the principles of growth and development over the life span and possess the ability to assess data reflective of the athletes' status and interpret the appropriate information.
Requirements
  • Minimum of bachelor's degree in a health-related field with current National Athletic Trainers' Association (NATA) certification.
  • Minimum of one to two years of athletic training experience in a sports environment preferred.
  • CPR certification required within 90 days of hire date.
  • Appreciable physical effort or strain; occasionally repetitive efforts may involve lifting, pushing, and pulling. Must be able to assist with or transfer patients of various weights/heights. Must be able to lift at least 30# independently and at least 150# with the assistance of another person. Must be able to push carts containing medical and athletic equipment. Must be able to stand for long periods of time, have good mobility skills, and be able to walk long distances. Must be able to carry medical, first aid, and athletic training kit and coolers for long distances.
  • Category I. Will have close contact with athletes and is likely to come in contact with blood and body fluids.
