About the Role

We are seeking a highly skilled Fire Protection Specialist and Hazardous Materials Technician to join our team at the Johns Hopkins Applied Physics Laboratory. As a key member of our environmental health and safety team, you will play a critical role in protecting people and the environment.

Key Responsibilities
  • Fire System Inspection and Maintenance: Conduct regular inspections of building-wide fire systems across the APL campus to ensure compliance with safety regulations.
  • Emergency Response: Respond to emergency alarms or calls, including fires, chemical spills, or medical emergencies, and provide critical support to ensure the safety of personnel and the environment.
  • Hazardous Waste Management: Assist with the collection, transport, segregation, and preparation of EPA-regulated waste materials for transfer to a disposal handling company.
  • Permitting and Compliance: Assess and provide Hot Work and Confined Space permits to ensure compliance with safety regulations.
  • Construction Support: Assist construction activities with operational fire suppression and alarm system requirements.
  • Environmental Safety and Health: Conduct other environmental safety and health activities as needed to support the laboratory's operations.
Qualifications
  • Education: High School Diploma or equivalent.
  • Training and Certifications: Firefighter II training (or more), Maryland Emergency Medical Technician B training, and the ability to acquire a Class B CDL within one year of hire.
  • Skills and Abilities: Knowledge of hazardous materials and hazardous wastes, ability to lift 50 pounds, and excellent interpersonal communication skills.
  • Teamwork and Collaboration: Ability to work within a positive, collaborative team environment and contribute to a culture of innovation and excellence.
