Position Overview
Under the guidance of the Childcare Center Director, the Childcare Support Specialist is responsible for engaging with children in the designated area. This role includes observing and supervising play activities, reading stories, facilitating games, serving meals and snacks, and maintaining cleanliness in both the area and among the children.
The Specialist will accompany children on walks or outings, assist the lead teacher in executing activities, and ensure the safety and well-being of all children in their care.
This position requires the demonstration of YMCA leadership competencies to effectively convey the mission, purpose, image, and core values of the YMCA of Greater Rochester.
Key Responsibilities
- Support the lead teacher in executing daily classroom activities and lesson planning.
- Foster and maintain positive relationships with staff and parents.
- Ensure a safe and appealing environment for all children in the program.
- Assist in the preparation and distribution of snacks and meals.
- Contribute to the cleanliness of the classroom and childcare facility.
- Understand and implement emergency procedures, rules, and regulations.
- Adhere to established childcare policies and NYS OCFS regulations.
- Participate in all required meetings and training sessions.
- Maintain necessary certifications.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
Qualifications
- Must be at least 16 years of age with a minimum of one year of experience working with children under 13 years of age, preferably in a structured environment.
- A high school diploma or GED and a Child Development Associate (CDA) credential are preferred.
- Bring maturity, responsibility, and a genuine interest in working with children.
- Possess strong interpersonal, communication, and organizational skills.
- Meet all guidelines and requirements for Assistant Teacher as mandated by the Office of Children & Family Services.
- First Aid Certified or the ability to obtain certification within 60 days of hire.
Physical Requirements
- Ability to supervise children by sight and sound at all times.
- Ability to respond quickly to safety issues in the environment (e.g., climbing, aggressive behavior).
- Ability to remain calm, objective, and respectful in potentially stressful situations (e.g., upset child, parent, or staff).
- Ability to move around the room to assist children and supervise daily activities, social interactions, and emotional needs.
- Ability to lift young children and objects (food baskets and supplies) up to 40 lbs.
- Ability to work in various weather conditions and move between program sites as required.
