Position Summary
Health eCareers is seeking a Charge Nurse with extensive experience in patient care and a deep understanding of specific patient populations.
The Charge Nurse will plan, coordinate, and oversee the daily operations of a designated shift within a clinical unit. This role involves supervising staff and facilitating communication with physicians and internal stakeholders to ensure optimal patient and family-centered care. Recognized as a change agent, the Charge Nurse will lead initiatives to enhance organizational systems that align with the department's mission, vision, and values. The ideal candidate will excel in creative problem-solving, conflict negotiation, and collaboration.
The Charge Nurse will demonstrate insight, sound judgment, and clinically informed risk-taking, with an awareness of how nursing care impacts patient outcomes based on experience and intuition.
Responsibilities include:
- Completing employee conferences, risk management, and unit management reports within specified timelines.
- Identifying the need for revisions and evaluating the effectiveness of operational forms.
- Coordinating resources within the unit to achieve optimal patient outcomes.
- Ensuring compliance with established policies and procedures.
- Staying informed of innovative clinical trends through benchmarking and evidence-based practices.
The Charge Nurse will also:
- Model effective delegation skills and assist colleagues in mastering delegation using the Synergy model for care.
- Mentor other Registered Nurses in the roles and responsibilities of a Charge Nurse.
- Evaluate resource utilization and cost containment efforts.
- Foster a collaborative environment that encourages open communication and addresses conflicts among nursing staff.
In addition, the Charge Nurse will:
- Coordinate unit staffing to meet departmental needs.
- Identify managerial challenges and initiate change tests.
- Participate in regulatory agency reviews and assist with administrative tasks such as budget planning and staffing schedules.
- Support administrative decisions and facilitate daily operational matters.
By actively shaping systems within the unit and hospital-wide, the Charge Nurse will strive for the best possible outcomes while supporting the needs of colleagues and patients through empathetic and non-judgmental behaviors.
Furthermore, the Charge Nurse will:
- Empower and advocate for nursing staff.
- Implement innovative strategies to address patient and family needs.
- Respond to customer concerns and complaints appropriately.
- Monitor and resolve escalated patient issues in collaboration with the Unit Director or Patient Advocate.
Educational responsibilities include:
- Identifying and collaborating on necessary educational programs.
- Developing management and leadership-focused in-service training.
- Ensuring compliance with educational requirements through effective scheduling and planning.
Minimum Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in Nursing.
- Two years of experience as a Registered Nurse, with at least two years in the relevant specialty.
- A valid, active, unencumbered Nursing license or a temporary permit approved by the relevant licensing board. Certification is preferred.
- BLS certification is required; ACLS may be necessary in specific departments.
