Overview

The Clinical Laboratory Specialist (CLS) is tasked with conducting laboratory analyses and ensuring quality assurance that necessitates independent judgment and accountability. The CLS possesses a thorough understanding of the scientific principles underlying laboratory assessments, alongside the technical, procedural, and analytical skills required. This professional is aware of the various factors influencing health and illness, and acknowledges the significance of appropriate test selection, as well as the multitude of reasons for inconsistent test outcomes (both patient-related and laboratory-related), variations in test results, and ethical considerations. Under the supervision of the Medical Director, the CLS executes a comprehensive array of chemical, microbiological, immunological, hematological, and immunohematological laboratory procedures for which they have been certified. They may also oversee the work of Medical Laboratory Technicians (MLTs), clinical lab assistants, and students. The CLS is authorized to perform waived, moderately complex, and highly complex testing as defined by regulatory standards.

Responsibilities & Requirements

Key Responsibilities:

  • Conducts precise testing, identifying abnormal or atypical results.
  • Communicates results promptly and accurately, whether in writing, verbally, by fax, or electronically.
  • Alerts relevant personnel as necessary.
  • Performs and documents instrument checks and quality control measures.
  • Conducts routine maintenance and calibration of laboratory equipment.
  • Recognizes quality control issues and initiates appropriate corrective actions.
  • Adheres to guidelines for analyzer operation and reagent preparation.
  • Documents and informs laboratory leadership as required.
  • Demonstrates proficiency in computer operations and departmental policies and procedures.
  • Actively participates in laboratory communications and staff meetings.
  • Prepares samples for testing with proper labeling, preservation, transport, and safe handling techniques.
  • Understands and applies the correct handling and reporting of proficiency samples.
  • Notifies appropriate caregivers by phone regarding critical and corrected results, documenting notifications in accordance with established policies.
  • Organizes and prioritizes tasks to complete assignments efficiently.
  • Capable of multitasking effectively.
  • Instructs on procedures for which they are qualified and assesses trainees using established evaluation methods.
  • Applies knowledge of disease processes to testing and interpreting results.
  • Conducts accuracy, precision, and correlation studies for both new and existing assays.
  • Assists in various areas including scheduling, training of students and staff, inventory management, procurement, performance improvement, and compliance initiatives.
  • Performs additional duties as assigned.
  • Maintains annual competency as required to perform laboratory testing.

Qualifications:

  • A bachelor's degree from an accredited institution, including coursework in biological sciences, chemistry, and mathematics, along with successful completion of a NAACLS accredited Medical Laboratory Science program or a related BS/BA program meeting certification requirements.
  • Certification as MT/MLS (ASCP) or MT/MLS (AMT) is required, or (ASCP) categorical certification with a BS or BA in a related field.

OR

An associate degree from an accredited institution in Medical Laboratory Science or a related field, including 60 semester hours of academic credit with at least 6 semester hours in chemistry and 6 semester hours in biology, or completion of a military medical laboratory specialist program. Certification as MLT (ASCP) or MLT (AMT) is required.

OR

Candidates who will complete a NAACLS accredited program within 6 months and are eligible for the national board exam will also be considered.

Preferred Skills:

The ideal candidate will possess knowledge and skills necessary to perform testing accurately relevant to their assigned sections. Familiarity with standardization and quality control principles, as well as the ability to troubleshoot effectively, is essential. Understanding of safety regulations, compliance requirements, and statistical methods is also important. Strong communication skills with patients, hospital staff, and physicians are crucial for success in this role.
