Position Summary:
As a High School Science Educator at Uncommon Schools, you will collaborate with colleagues to equip students with the essential skills and knowledge to engage critically in scientific fields. Our approach emphasizes inquiry-based learning, fostering student discourse, and employing various instructional strategies to ignite a passion for scientific inquiry and analysis. You will prepare students to excel in any STEM discipline and cultivate their abilities as informed citizen scientists.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Instruction:
    Deliver a comprehensive curriculum covering Biology, Chemistry, Physics, and Environmental Sciences, aimed at preparing students for Advanced Placement (AP) and college-level courses.
  • Enhance students' skills in questioning, modeling, explanation construction, data analysis, argumentation, and conducting interactive laboratory experiments.
  • Create a classroom environment that encourages students to confidently engage in scientific discussions.
  • Facilitate student-led discussions where evidence is used to formulate claims and critique arguments.
  • Guide students through inquiry-based explorations of scientific topics and oversee lab and project-based tasks.
  • Collaborate with the Science department to set academic and engagement objectives for students.

Data Analysis:
Engage in weekly meetings with your principal and/or instructional coach to assess and respond to trends in student performance and assessments. Implement strategies to tailor instruction for diverse learners.

School Culture:
Foster positive relationships with students to ensure they feel valued and supported. Collaborate with families to provide necessary resources for student success. Participate in professional development and coaching sessions to enhance your teaching practice. Engage in school-wide meetings to promote community, embody core values, and support student achievement. Work with your grade-level team to establish academic goals and refine instructional strategies.

Enthusiasm for collaboration with various stakeholders in the interest of student success. Self-motivated learner who actively seeks and applies feedback to improve outcomes. Required Experience:
Interest in impacting K-12 students in urban settings (1-2 years preferred). Academic background in Science, Technology, Engineering, Mathematics, or related fields. A bachelor's degree from an accredited institution is required prior to employment. Certification is not mandatory at hiring, but candidates must meet state certification eligibility requirements.
