Position Overview
A postdoctoral researcher opportunity is available at Michigan State University within the Great Lakes Bioenergy Research Center (GLBRC) as part of the esteemed Keegstra Program.

Role Summary
We are looking for a dedicated individual to join the Brandizzi laboratory, collaborating with the TerAvest laboratory to innovate plant enzymes that facilitate the synthesis of cell wall glucans, aiming to enhance the in situ levels of C6 sugars.

This initiative addresses a pioneering field in biopolymer engineering, utilizing advanced predictive methodologies for protein engineering.

Project Goals
The research will uncover essential principles for targeted plant protein engineering and biopolymer production, contributing to the enhancement of atmospheric CO2 capture and storage, while aiding in the decarbonization of fuel and chemical sectors through improved access to sustainable carbon sources.

Key Responsibilities
The successful candidate will be tasked with:

  • Designing and planning research initiatives
  • Conducting laboratory experiments and in silico analyses
  • Presenting findings at research meetings and academic conferences
  • Preparing detailed reports and manuscripts
  • Formulating research proposals as required

In accordance with GLBRC Keegstra Postdoctoral Researcher Grantor stipulations, only candidates who have completed their Ph.D. within the last three years are eligible for this position.

Fellowship Details
The initial fellowship is awarded for a two-year term, contingent upon meeting program criteria, with the possibility of a third year based on demonstrated progress and funding availability.

The compensation for this role will be set at 15% above the NIH recommended postdoctoral stipend, with potential increases aligned with institutional policies in subsequent years.

Required Qualifications
Doctorate in Molecular Biology, Enzymology, Computational Biology, Biochemistry, or related disciplines.

Minimum Requirements
Ph.D. in the aforementioned fields, with eligibility criteria aligned with GLBRC Keegstra Postdoctoral Researcher Grantor requirements.

Essential Skills
Qualified candidates must demonstrate:

  • Strong communication skills for effective collaboration
  • Experience with enzyme-related techniques
  • Willingness to learn protein prediction software
  • Experience or intention to work with yeast

Preferred Qualifications
Desirable attributes include:

  • Experience in enzyme bioengineering
  • Familiarity with Alphafold
  • Knowledge of yeast and plant molecular biology
