Job Title: Generation Planning Analyst

Madison Gas and Electric Company is seeking a highly skilled Generation Planning Analyst to join our team. As a key member of our Generation and Transmission Planning Department, you will be responsible for providing technical expertise and project coordination to execute projects that achieve optimum overall cost-effectiveness, efficiency, reliability, and flexibility of the power supply system.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Coordinate the establishment and/or maintenance of state-of-the-art generation system models to provide timely alternatives for efficient, economical, and reliable planning and operation of the power supply system.
  • Serve as a technical expert for the department on generation and power supply matters, providing guidance and support to colleagues and stakeholders.
  • Coordinate power supply plans for presentation to regulatory agencies, ensuring compliance with relevant rules and regulations.
  • Prepare reports and studies for departments throughout the Company as directed by management, analyzing power supply plans and/or power production facilities.
  • Represent the Company on committees, task forces, and similar groups, as assigned, to promote the Company's interests and objectives.
  • Advises and consults with departments and individuals within the Company on power supply matters to help achieve the objectives of the department and Company.
  • Serve as project leader on various projects as assigned, ensuring timely completion and meeting project objectives.
  • Consult with equipment vendors, outside engineering firms, outside consulting firms, assisting in generation resource analysis, internal and external legal counsel, and other utilities and interfaces with regulatory agencies to help achieve Company objectives.
  • Maintain awareness and understanding of existing and emerging technologies and regulatory issues that may affect the economics and cost competitiveness of the Company's electric resource portfolio.
  • Maintain awareness and understanding of the composition and general economic competitiveness of the generation resources of other major Wisconsin utilities.
  • Functionally supervise other staff on assigned projects, providing guidance and support to ensure successful project outcomes.
Requirements:
  • Bachelor of Science degree in engineering, business, math, economics, or equivalent from a recognized, accredited university.
  • Preferred a minimum of two years of experience in utility long-term generation/power supply planning, including the application of electric generation planning techniques.
  • Preferred experience in at least one major regulatory proceeding, providing and successfully defending analyses and testimony in support of utility generation plans, additions, or changes.
  • Good verbal and written skills required.
  • Knowledge of technical concepts, principles, and computerized techniques required to solve and analyze power supply options.
  • Strong analytical skills.
  • Competence in using computer algorithms and software for modeling and analyzing electric energy resource technologies and alternatives.
  • Knowledge and use of the PLEXOS energy modeling software is preferred.
  • Knowledge of other modeling applications such as PROMOD for nodal transmission modeling, Electric Generation Expansion Analysis Software (EGEAS), EnCompass power planning software, Aurora energy forecasting software, and PowerWorld software is beneficial.
  • Knowledge of Midwest ISO rules and regulations.
  • Thorough knowledge of the fundamentals and methods used in performing economic analyses relating to electric utility investment decisions.
  • Basic understanding of the review and approval processes and environmental permitting requirements established by state and federal regulatory agencies related to electric generation.
