Manager of Sterile Processing Operations

Overview: This position is responsible for the strategic oversight and management of the sterilization, storage, and distribution of sterile supplies and surgical instruments.

Key Responsibilities:

The following duties are essential to the role. Failure to perform these duties may result in disqualification from the position.

  • Oversee the thorough cleaning, decontamination, assembly, packaging, and sterilization processes for all surgical instruments and reusable medical supplies.
  • Manage the logistics of processing, storing, and distributing sterile supplies and equipment.
  • Supervise the daily operations of the department to ensure efficiency and compliance.
  • Monitor surgical case schedules to guarantee that instruments, equipment, and case carts are prepared and available as required.
  • Ensure adherence to all sterilization protocols and standards.
  • Meet the instrumentation and equipment needs as defined by healthcare professionals.
  • Evaluate departmental workflows and implement improvements as necessary, while supervising staff effectively.
  • Conduct educational programs for staff to enhance skills and knowledge in sterile processing.
  • Ensure comprehensive training for employees in all facets of sterile processing and case cart preparation.
  • Assess employee performance and provide recommendations for enhancement.
  • Engage in various projects as assigned by management.

Additional Responsibilities:

  • Perform other duties as required.

Qualifications:

Education: Graduation from an accredited Surgical Technician program is preferred.

Experience: A minimum of three years in a hospital setting, including at least two years in a supervisory or management role, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

Certifications: Certification as an Operating Room Technician or from the Certification Board for Sterile Processing and Distribution (CBSPD) or the Healthcare Sterile Processing Association (HSPA) as a Certified Registered Central Service Technician (CRCST) is required within six months of hire. Certification in Healthcare Leadership (HSPA) or in Sterile Processing Management (CBSPD) is also required within six months of hire.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities: Comprehensive understanding of medical supply maintenance and sterilization practices, sanitation protocols, safety measures for steam and gas sterilization, and basic record-keeping principles. Strong supervisory skills and the ability to foster effective relationships with medical staff, peers, and subordinates. Excellent verbal and written communication skills are essential.
