Job Overview

POSITION: DEPUTY CONSTABLE (MENTAL TRANSPORT/TROPICAL TEXAS BEHAVIORAL HEALTH)

SALARY: $37,616.00 annually

POSITION SUMMARY

This role involves significant responsibility in a non-supervisory capacity. The primary duties include safeguarding individuals and property. Responsibilities also encompass the delivery of civil court documents, execution of arrest warrants, and maintaining accurate office records. The position requires patrolling rural areas and providing assistance to local government entities. Please note that this is not a Civil Service position. The assignment will be at the Tropical Texas Behavioral Health Office.


KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:
  1. Ensure the safety of individuals and property.
  2. Deliver legal documents (citations, notices, summons, subpoenas, etc.).
  3. Maintain daily logs of served documents.
  4. Act as bailiff in court proceedings.
  5. Uphold Federal and State regulations.
  6. Work rotating shifts, including weekends and holidays.
  7. Operate emergency response vehicles.
  8. Respond during crisis situations (hurricanes, floods, riots, etc.).
  9. Conduct patrols in rural regions.
  10. Support crime prevention initiatives.
  11. Collaborate with other law enforcement officers or agencies.
  12. Secure crime scenes.
  13. Investigate traffic incidents.
  14. Enforce criminal and traffic laws (citations, warnings, investigations, etc.).
  15. May undertake additional related tasks.
  16. Provide testimony in court as mandated by law.
  17. Coordinate the removal, transport, and storage of confiscated items.
  18. Apprehend and detain law violators.
  19. Transport individuals in custody as directed by the court.

QUALIFICATIONS:EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:

A High School Diploma or equivalent is required. A minimum of two (2) years of investigative experience is preferred.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:

Strong understanding of the Texas Penal Code, Traffic Code, Family Law, and Juvenile Law. Proficient in grammar and effective communication skills, both verbal and written, in English. Ability to work independently without direct supervision, analyze situations, and develop solutions. Familiarity with state and federal laws as they pertain to employee benefits programs. Competence in operating personal computers, typewriters, and basic office equipment. Ability to adapt to rapidly changing situations and manage multiple tasks simultaneously. Knowledge of civil procedure laws. Proficient in the use of firearms and security equipment.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:

Must possess a basic Peace Officer Certification from the Texas Commission on Law Enforcement. A valid Texas Motor Vehicle Operator's License and a satisfactory driving record are required. Must provide a Birth Certificate and Social Security Number.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

This position involves working rotating shifts and may require handling, sitting, walking, standing, bending, reaching, and twisting to perform essential job functions. The role may involve pursuing and apprehending violent individuals. Physical demands include lifting and carrying an average-sized person for placement in a patrol vehicle or for safety. The ability to maintain composure in distressing situations is essential.

CONTACTS:

Engagement with Elected/Appointed Officials, Division/Department Heads, County employees, law enforcement agencies, health providers, and the public regarding departmental operations is crucial. Respectful communication is necessary when interacting with law enforcement agencies, community leaders, and groups.

EXTERNAL AND INTERNAL CONTACTS:

Frequent interaction with the public, law enforcement agencies, and emergency responders is required. Communication primarily occurs via telephone, radio, and in-person. Internally, there is constant communication with Elected/Appointed Officials, Division/Department Heads, colleagues, and other county employees through various channels.

RESPONSIBILITY:

The Deputy Constable role significantly impacts the public perception of the Constables' office. Responsibilities include frequent public interaction and handling confidential information/documents related to the position. All criminal activities must be reported.

DECISION-MAKING:

Sound judgment is necessary at all times to ensure effective job performance and the successful completion of special assignments and projects.

GUIDANCE:

Employees receive direction for essential functions and are expected to devise unique solutions for completing work assignments within the framework of law enforcement and business practices.


Note: This position is not covered by Civil Service.
