SPECIAL EDUCATION TEACHER

The Center for Developmentally Disabled (CDD) is a non-profit organization established to support individuals with developmental and intellectual disabilities. Our mission encompasses providing residential care, employment assistance, day habilitation for adults, and educational services for children referred from the local area.

JOB QUALIFICATIONS

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS REQUIRED:

EDUCATION:

A college degree

Valid Missouri Certification in Special Education (SDD, EMH, BD/ED, LD, CC, and/or ECSE)

EXPERIENCE:

2 to 3 years of teaching experience in special education, particularly with autism or behavioral challenges is preferred.

MATERIAL AND EQUIPMENT USED:

Essential tools for this role include standard office equipment such as telephones, fax machines, computers, and copiers. The ability to obtain and maintain certifications in Abuse & Neglect, First Aid/CPR, Mandt, and Gentle Teaching is necessary.

WORKING CONDITIONS:

This position is situated in an educational environment for students with developmental disabilities and behavioral challenges. Candidates must meet physical requirements, including the ability to lift, push, or pull over 50 lbs, and perform various physical tasks.

JOB DUTIES
  • Design and implement educational programs and curricula tailored for children with special developmental and behavioral needs.
  • Facilitate engaging, non-fail activities that foster self-esteem through diverse modalities, focusing on pre-readiness, self-help, and behavior management.
  • Establish goals and objectives for Individual Education Plans (IEPs) and provide necessary data for evaluations and progress reports.
  • Create lesson plans that employ effective teaching strategies and prepare substitute plans as required. Adhere to behavior plans outlined in the IEP.
  • Maintain positive communication with parents via phone and during IEP meetings.
  • Collaborate with staff to develop and implement a daily class schedule.
  • Collect and analyze data regularly to assess the effectiveness of teaching methods and student progress, sharing findings with the Team Leader and Program Coordinator.
  • Ensure classroom cleanliness and organization, including the management of materials and bulletin boards.
  • Provide guidance and support to paraprofessional staff within the classroom and across other classrooms as needed.
  • Contribute to the annual evaluations of paraprofessional staff and participate in personal evaluations with administration.
  • Follow policies and procedures as outlined in the staff handbook and Code of Ethics.
  • Maintain all required licenses and certifications.
  • Attend mandatory training sessions, staff meetings, and in-services as requested.
  • Complete training for state testing and implement assessments for students.
  • Engage in fundraising and public relations activities for the Center as appropriate.
  • Meet all deadlines established by the Program Coordinator or other supervisors.
  • Perform additional duties as assigned.
