The City of New Haven is seeking a motivated and responsible individual to join our team as a Safe Crossing Officer. This part-time position offers a unique opportunity to make a positive impact in our community while gaining valuable experience in public service.

As a Safe Crossing Officer, you will play a critical role in ensuring the safety of pedestrians, particularly school children, by managing secure crossings at designated intersections. This position requires a proactive approach, combining vigilance with effective communication skills to handle various situations.

Job Summary

The Safe Crossing Officer will be responsible for managing the flow of pedestrian and vehicular traffic in an efficient and safe manner. This includes responding effectively in emergency situations and working closely with school bus drivers and parents to ensure smooth operations without compromising safety standards. The officer may also assist in monitoring special events and engaging with the community to promote traffic calming initiatives.

To be successful in this role, you will need to possess a strong understanding of traffic regulations, particularly those related to school crossings, parking, and intersections. You should also be familiar with the use of traffic control devices such as Stop Signs, Signals, and Street Markings.

The ideal candidate will have excellent observation skills, allowing them to identify motor vehicles by body style, color, and license plate numbers. They should also be able to recall details of incidents, accidents, and other interactions. A strong ability to communicate with drivers and pedestrians in a clear and concise manner using hand signals, whistles, or traffic control devices is essential.

Salary: $18.50 - $22.50 per hour, depending on experience.

This is a part-time position, with a maximum of 10 hours per week during the school year. However, additional assignments may be required during special events.

Benefits:

This position does not offer medical benefits, vacation pay, sick pay, union membership, or union contractual benefits.
