Job Description

Job Summary:

Supports and coordinates the day-to-day activities of nursing personnel in patient care units, providing direction to clinical staff, implementing work of assigned units, and coordinating activities with other patient care units and related departments. Provides routine and complex care, with the ability to plan long-range goals or plans. Continues to develop the ability to cope with and manage contingencies of clinical nursing. Makes appropriate assignments and delegates to other care providers to help manage the clinical situation.

Key Responsibilities:

  1. Meets expectations of the applicable OneCHRISTUS Competencies: Leader of Self, Leader of Others, or Leader of Leaders.
  2. Organizes and oversees patient care delivery during assigned shifts, ensuring proper staffing and smooth operations of patient care units.
  3. Coaches and counsels individual team members; monitors and provides feedback on performance and addresses training needs.
  4. Documents daily staffing, operational, and administrative records; maintains compliance with governmental policies and procedures.
  5. Provides direction and support to nursing staff, demonstrating and promoting respect for the dignity and rights of every patient; assists with communications with patients and families.
  6. Allocates team resources responsibly and equitably, delegates appropriate levels of responsibility and authority, and provides oversight and guidance.
  7. Meditates and resolves conflicts among individuals, groups, and departments.

Core Competencies:

Standard I: Utilizes the Nursing Process

  1. Uses critical thinking skills to assess the basic physical, psychosocial, social, cultural, spiritual, and development needs of patients and families.
  2. Communicates findings to appropriate healthcare team members.
  3. Develops and uses a specific plan of care and modifies it to meet individual patient needs using evidence-based practice. Implements patient care and therapeutic procedures; monitors and documents progression of treatment and teaching goals.
  4. Evaluates the care and treatment provided to patients and the patient's response to the care and treatment.
  5. Performs timely reassessment and documentation.
  6. Must be able to perform unit-specific competencies based on the specific patient care need for designated unit's patient population.

Standard II. Patient Throughput & Patient Flow Process

  1. Anticipates and plans for admission, discharge, and transfer needs to facilitate patient flow.
  2. Utilizes appropriate systems of communication and tools to facilitate the discharge process.
  3. Coaches on tools and techniques for checking, cross-checking, and validating orders to ensure accuracy.

Standard III. Unit Operations

  1. Plans, directs, and evaluates the overall nursing care and functions in a particular nursing unit during an assigned shift.
  2. Demonstrates good stewardship in the proper use and maintenance of equipment and supplies.
  3. Assesses departmental staffing needs; actively participates in resourcing efforts.
  4. Educates and trains others on the operations, ethics, and regulations within the industry.

Standard IV. Safe Practice/Quality Care/Regulations

  1. Incorporates patient safety practices and guidelines to promote a safe environment resulting in positive patient outcomes.
  2. Demonstrates accountability for nursing research and quality improvement activities.
  3. Provides evidence-based nursing care.
  4. Communicates patient information effectively across the continuum of care.
  5. Educates and trains others on the operations, ethics, and regulations within the industry.
  6. Knowledge of federal, state, and local healthcare-related laws and regulations; ability to comply with these in healthcare practices and activities.

Standard V. Leadership

  1. Serves as a subject matter expert for patient care.
  2. Gives continuing feedback, recognizes achievement, and recommends improvement as a patient care subject matter expert.
  3. Supports proper allocation of team resources, delegates appropriate levels of responsibility and authority, and provides support and guidance for high-quality patient care.
  4. Meditates and resolves conflicts among individuals, groups, and departments.

Requirements:

  • Bachelor of Science Degree in Nursing, preferred.
  • 2 years of clinical patient care experience in a relevant setting.
  • BLS required.
  • RN License in state of employment or compact.
