Job Summary

Advocate Aurora Health is seeking a skilled Ultrasound Technologist Level I to join our team in Palos Heights, Illinois. As a key member of our diagnostic imaging team, you will be responsible for performing high-quality ultrasound procedures, providing exceptional patient care, and collaborating with radiologists to ensure accurate diagnoses.

Key Responsibilities
  • Position patients and select technical factors and equipment to obtain optimal quality scans, utilizing immobilization techniques as needed.
  • Operate portable ultrasound equipment to perform procedures throughout the hospital, as requested.
  • Assist physicians with recommendations for optimal studies, suggesting technical factors and equipment for procedures.
  • Deliver patient care and maintain department standards of continued quality improvement.
  • Prepare ultrasound rooms with necessary supplies and equipment, ensuring a smooth workflow.
  • Utilize effective phone etiquette and maintain patient confidentiality according to hospital policies.
  • Follow in-and-out patient identification policies and maintain a timely flow of patients in room assignments or work areas.
  • Treat patients and customers with respect and compassion, transporting patients as needed to meet customer needs.
  • Document department records, including inventories of supplies and patient statistics, to ensure adequate supplies and proper patient records.
  • Maintain correct patient records, assembling daily patient schedules and preparing patient folders to preserve patient records.
  • Prepare ultrasound rooms, ensuring necessary equipment and supplies are available before performing procedures.
  • Operate Hospital Information Computer Systems as required and secure pertinent history from patients for each procedure.
  • Maintain positive guest relations when dealing with patients, fellow employees, or personnel encountered during daily activities.
  • Obtain patient history to provide radiologists with adequate information for film interpretation.
  • Work closely with radiologists to ensure optimal outcomes for each procedure performed.
  • Comply with established Accrediting Organization and hospital safety standards to ensure patient and staff well-being.
  • Maintain annual CPR certification and operate equipment safely, following hospital and department policies and procedures.
  • Use standard Precautions to protect self from bodily fluid exposure and maintain hospital department disaster, fire, and evacuation policy.
  • Promote patient safety by reporting issues through established channels and participating in safety initiatives.
  • Attend mandatory in-services and meetings, staying up-to-date with current ultrasound skills and new developments in the field.
  • Provide instruction and assistance as required by students or fellow technologists orientating in ultrasound.
Requirements
  • ARDMS Registry eligible.
  • ARDMS Registry to be successfully completed within the first year of employment.
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
  • Possess a high degree of technical knowledge to perform specialized U/S studies with minimal assistance from radiologists.
  • Able to make diagnostic judgments when scanning and present them to radiologists for interpretation.
  • ARDMS Registry eligible. ARDMS Registry to be successfully completed within the first year of employment.
  • CPR Certification.
Physical Requirements and Working Conditions
  • Ability to adjust to flexible hours at minimal notice as required.
  • Ability to work odd hours (late hours on-call).
  • Ability to respond to emergency call-back in minimal time.
  • Ability to stand for long periods of time.
  • Ability to constantly view small CRT screens during exams.
  • Ability to perform lifting activities related to patients.
  • Exposed to radiation.
  • Ability to operate portable equipment.
  • Ability to deal with extremely ill patients.
  • Ability to communicate with patients.
  • Ability to adjust to flexible work hours.
  • Ability to participate in on-call programs and be available to department needs with minimal notice.
  • Ability to do light, medium, or heavy lifting.
  • Ability to make independent professional decisions using good judgment skills.
  • Ability to practice high-quality patient care and technical competence.
  • Ability to function with minimal assistance in performing job activities.
  • Ability to demonstrate oral and written communication skills.
  • May be exposed to hazardous chemicals, such as film processing chemicals.

Ability to attend out-of-town site visits to view equipment.

  • This position will need to recognize needs and behaviors of a variety of age groups of patients treated, i.e., understand child growth and development; normal patterns of adolescent behavior and look for signs of normal aging, prior experience with various age groups is preferred.
  • If position has direct patient care or direct patient contact, the following lifting requirement supersedes any previous lifting requirement effective 06/01/2015. Ability to lift up to 35 pounds without assistance. For patient lifts of over 35 pounds, or when patient is unable to assist with the lift, patient handling equipment is expected to be used, with at least one other associate, when available. Unique patient lifting/movement situations will be assessed on a case-by-case basis.
