Perioperative Nursing Specialist

As a vital member of the surgical team, the Perioperative Nursing Specialist is responsible for delivering safe and personalized nursing care throughout the perioperative process, ensuring optimal patient outcomes through thorough assessment and intervention.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Patient Education: Guides patients through surgical procedures, addressing their concerns and educating them to reduce anxiety and enhance understanding.
  • Patient Care: Collaborates with healthcare professionals, patients, and families to maintain continuity of care, advocating for patient needs and revising care plans as necessary.
  • Patient Assessment: Conducts comprehensive and ongoing assessments, ensuring informed consent and tailoring surgical care plans to meet the unique physical, psychosocial, cultural, and spiritual needs of each patient.
  • Treatment and Procedures: Applies principles of medical and surgical asepsis, executing treatments in line with established protocols and demonstrating proficiency in the use of operating room equipment.
  • Communication: Facilitates effective communication among the healthcare team and patients, fostering a professional and supportive environment to promote positive outcomes.
  • Documentation: Maintains accurate and detailed patient records, utilizing the nursing process to support high-quality care.
  • Cost Containment: Recognizes the importance of resource management and the economical use of supplies.
  • Continuous Quality Improvement: Participates in quality improvement initiatives, contributing data and insights for ongoing projects.
  • Supervision: Provides guidance and support to the surgical team, effectively managing high-pressure situations and coordinating activities.
  • O.R. Call: Plays a key role in ensuring 24-hour coverage for emergency surgical procedures.
  • Additional Duties: Performs other responsibilities as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS AND REQUIREMENTS

EXPERIENCE: A minimum of 2 years in acute care settings is preferred, with recent surgical experience being highly desirable.

EDUCATION: Must be a graduate of an accredited nursing program.

LICENSES AND CERTIFICATIONS: Valid nursing license required, with a strong foundation in nursing theory and practice. BLS Certification is mandatory, and AORN Certification is preferred.

OTHER: Flexibility to work across various facilities as needed.
