Job Summary

We are seeking a highly skilled and experienced Chief of Staff to join our team at King County. The successful candidate will provide strategic leadership and support to our department, overseeing external relations systems and operations, and serving as a key advisor to our Director and leadership team.

Key Responsibilities
  • Lead and direct external relations systems and operations, including communications, government relations, and policy development.
  • Provide strategic leadership and support to our department, including developing and implementing strategic plans and initiatives.
  • Build and maintain relationships with key stakeholders, including the King County Council, cities, local communities, and advocacy coalitions.
  • Develop and implement effective communications strategies to advance our department's goals and objectives.
  • Provide coaching and guidance to our team members, including planning work assignments, conducting employee development and performance management.
Requirements
  • 5+ years of increasingly senior experience in managing, interacting, recruiting, and promoting accountability with and within diverse staff teams.
  • Deep knowledge of equity, racial and social justice principles and practices and an understanding of the effects of race and policy and systems-based inequities on marginalized communities and populations.
  • Advanced familiarity and previous experience with King County and Washington State legislative processes, including the State and County budget processes.
  • Professional experience preparing and presenting effective and accurate information to a wide array of audiences.
  • Experience leading teams and coordinating internal systems in a local or regional government organization of similar scale, scope, and complexity.

  • Experience with, understanding and demonstrated experience implementing King County's True North Values.
  • Familiarity with DCHS's special initiatives, including the Crisis Care Centers (CCC) Initiative; Veterans Seniors, and Human Services Levy (VSHSL); Mental Illness and Drug Dependency (MIDD) sales tax; Best Starts for Kids (BSK); Health through Housing (HTH), and Puget Sound Taxpayer Accountability Account (PSTAA).
