Position Overview
We are currently seeking a Solar Estimator with a minimum of 5 years of experience in EPC estimating. This role will report directly to the Director of Preconstruction. The ideal candidate will be results-driven, proactive, and possess exceptional attention to detail, ready to tackle the challenges of advancing the future of energy within the dynamic solar industry.
Key Responsibilities
Development Estimating
- Collaborate with internal and external stakeholders to ascertain interconnection requirements for utilities and assess associated costs for both behind-the-meter (BTM) and front-of-the-meter (FTM) projects.
- Work alongside Development and Engineering teams to formulate preliminary design budgets for various projects.
EPC Estimating
- Prepare precise, competitive, and timely cost estimates and schedules for distributed generation (DG) scale projects (0.5MW-50MW) including commercial and industrial rooftop, carport, and ground-mount solar installations, as well as EV charging stations during the preconstruction phase.
- Conduct thorough reviews of specifications, scope of work, drawings, and other request for proposal (RFP) documents to ensure a comprehensive understanding of project requirements and potential risks.
- Interpret solar construction drawings and execute accurate project takeoffs efficiently.
- Manage relationships with subcontractors and vendors throughout the RFP process, including non-disclosure agreements (NDAs).
- Collaborate closely with Engineering to offer value-engineering recommendations based on current market costs.
- Coordinate with the Accounting team to ensure accurate internal cost estimates for projects.
- Perform detailed evaluations of subcontractor and vendor bids to ensure competitive pricing.
- Deliver comprehensive RFP responses, including proposals, pricing breakdowns, and preliminary schedules, in a timely manner.
- Maintain organized records and databases for costs, subcontractors, vendors, and other relevant data.
Pre-Construction Responsibilities
- Develop contract and construction schedules in partnership with Project Management, Construction, and Engineering teams.
- Assist in the negotiation of EPC contracts.
- Conduct pre-qualification assessments of subcontractors and vendors.
- Support the selection, negotiation, and execution of contracts with subcontractors.
- Coordinate with racking vendors or pull testing companies to ensure timely completion of necessary testing.
- Establish and oversee the submittals process for all subcontractor scopes within project management software.
- Facilitate and co-lead preconstruction meetings.
Process Improvement Initiatives
- Lead 'Lessons Learned' sessions post-project to identify setbacks and develop corrective action plans.
- Continuously analyze actual cost data from ongoing and completed projects to refine future cost estimates.
- Gather feedback from the construction team regarding subcontractor performance and implement improvements in future selections.
- Identify process bottlenecks and devise innovative solutions to enhance efficiency.
- Organize learning sessions with subject matter experts to promote continuous education.
Qualifications and Skills
- Proficiency in MS Office, particularly strong Excel skills; familiarity with MS OneNote is preferred.
- Experience with Procore and Smartsheet is advantageous.
- Exceptional organizational, project management, and data entry capabilities.
- Strong verbal and written communication skills.
- Excellent note-taking and retention abilities.
- Strong coordination skills to support cross-functional teams, along with effective time management, active listening, critical thinking, and analytical skills.
- Superior attention to detail and a strong ability to learn independently.

Required Experience
- A minimum of 3 years of experience in a Solar EPC environment is essential.
- Experience in subcontractor tendering and evaluation is required.
- A completed Bachelor's or Master's degree in Construction Management, Energy Economics, Energy Systems/Engineering, Environmental Sciences, Data Analytics, or related fields is preferred.
- Familiarity with electrical design components and/or engineering is considered a strong asset.
- Experience with self-perform estimating is highly desirable.
