Job Summary

The Transportation Specialist will be responsible for safely transporting special education students for the Saginaw Intermediate School District. This role requires a high level of attention to detail and the ability to work well under pressure.

Key Responsibilities
  • Meet all requirements and follow rules and regulations established by the Michigan Department of Education and the Saginaw ISD.
  • Obey all laws governing the operation of a vehicle and/or a school bus.
  • Maintain a safe environment on the bus.
  • Responsible for the bus, its equipment, its passengers, and the attendant assigned to his/her bus.
  • Complete and document daily pre-trip inspection of the vehicle and immediately report needed repairs.
  • Attend classes in CPR/First Aid and other training sessions as directed by the Supervisor of Transportation.
  • Work with the bus assistant and district employees to meet the individual medical, safety, and behavioral needs of the students being transported.
  • Be at assigned work site at stated starting times, ready to perform assigned duties.
  • Implement behavior management plans in cooperation with program staff, as appropriate.
  • Secure wheelchairs and all child restraint systems appropriately.
  • Keep all student, parent, and staff information confidential.
  • Have a positive attitude in working with students, parents, community members, and other staff members.
Requirements
  • A high school diploma or GED equivalency is required.
  • An appropriate commercial driver's license and bus driver's certification are required.
  • An excellent driving record is required.
  • Prior work experience with children is required, with experience working with special needs children preferred.
  • Good interpersonal relationship skills and the ability to work well with students, parents, and co-workers are required.
  • The ability to keep all student, parent, and staff information confidential is required.
  • The ability to lift a minimum of 75 pounds is required.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills are required.
  • A working knowledge of computer keyboarding skills is required.
  • The ability to receive additional training to improve job skills is required.
