The UNC REX Neonatal Intensive Care Unit is a Level IV NICU featuring 21 beds. Our board-certified Neonatologists, along with a highly skilled healthcare team, focus on the care of infants requiring medical treatment due to prematurity and its complications, neonatal transitional issues, congenital anomalies, and other medical challenges. We care for approximately 450 to 500 newborns with critical or specialized care needs annually. Our team is deeply committed to families, supported by a Family Advisory Council of alumni parents, providing valuable insights to ensure the NICU team delivers exceptional patient and family-centered care.
Key Responsibilities:
1. Assist healthcare providers during routine examinations and procedures, including the procurement of necessary equipment and supplies.
2. Thoroughly review patient care documentation, noting any significant changes in the patient's condition, and promptly report to a registered nurse or physician.
3. Perform various clerical tasks, such as organizing and prioritizing workload, greeting and directing visitors, researching information as requested, reviewing orders for accuracy, revising orders as needed, answering phone calls and patient call lights, transcribing physician orders, and maintaining medical records. Conduct routine quality assurance audits, safety checks, and inventory of supplies. Provide administrative and clerical support, including performance improvement audits and data entry.
4. Offer clinical support by maintaining a clean work environment, ensuring office equipment is operational, troubleshooting common software and hardware issues, changing linens, checking supply inventory, restocking supplies, transporting patients, supplies, and specimens, and assisting in the orientation of new employees and students.
5. Deliver direct personal care to patients as outlined in care plans, including bathing, dressing, feeding, and assisting with mobility. Measure and record vital signs, height, and weight. May involve specimen collection, skin preparations, catheter care, capillary blood glucose checks, simple wound care, range of motion exercises, and/or postural drainage.
6. Reinforce routine education provided to patients by registered nurses or physicians and document patient understanding of instructions. Distribute educational materials to patients and healthcare providers as requested.

Licensure/Certification Requirements:
● Listed as a Nursing Assistant I by the North Carolina Department of Health and Human Services
● Basic Life Support (BLS) certification
Professional Experience Requirements:
● Requires six months of clerical or customer service experience.
Knowledge/Skills/and Abilities Requirements:
● Must be fluent in verbal and written English. Ability to develop computer skills if not already competent.
