Purpose Statement
The role of the Licensed Practical Nurse is to deliver health care services tailored to meet the individual health requirements of students. This includes implementing health care plans as directed by physicians, adhering to legal regulations concerning student health, and providing necessary care for students who are ill, medically fragile, or injured. The nurse will also serve as a health resource for teachers, staff, and administrators while identifying health issues for appropriate referrals.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Administers first aid, medications, and specialized medical treatments under the guidance of a certified school nurse to ensure proper care for students.
  • Conducts mandated health screenings (e.g., vision, dental, hearing) to identify medical conditions and provide necessary care.
  • Evaluates situations regarding student safety and health issues to identify problems and ensure compliance with legal standards.
  • Collaborates with parents, students, health care providers, and public agencies to promote and secure necessary health services.
  • Facilitates age-appropriate health education programs and activities in alignment with classroom curricula.
  • Implements individualized health care plans for students with chronic health conditions.
  • Maintains communication with parents/guardians regarding changes in student health and recommends further medical intervention when necessary.
  • Ensures confidentiality of student health records and maintains accurate documentation as required by legal and professional standards.
  • Monitors students with chronic illnesses to assist them in achieving optimal health outcomes.
  • Participates in meetings to share information about student health needs and improve service delivery.
  • Prepares necessary documentation to support health services and comply with mandated requirements.
  • Provides training on various health-related topics to promote a healthy lifestyle among students and staff.
  • Refers students needing additional medical attention for follow-up treatment.
  • Reports health and safety concerns to the appropriate authorities to maintain a safe learning environment.
  • Responds to emergency medical situations to ensure immediate care and follow-up actions.
Other Duties:
  • Performs additional tasks as assigned to ensure the efficient operation of the health services unit.
Qualifications:
Skills, Knowledge, and Abilities:
Ability to perform technical tasks, maintain accurate records, and apply relevant health codes and regulations. Knowledge of health services in a school setting and understanding of child development stages are essential. Strong communication skills and the ability to work with diverse groups are required.

Work Environment:
The role may involve occasional lifting and significant fine motor skills. The position is typically performed in a school environment with exposure to health risks.

Experience:Relevant experience in a specialized field is required.

Education:Community college or vocational school degree with a focus on health-related studies is preferred. Must hold necessary certifications and licenses.

Certifications:
CPR/First Aid Certificate, Practical Nurse License, and valid driver's license are required.
