Job Summary

We are seeking a highly skilled Senior Civil Engineer to join our team at the Metropolitan Water Reclamation District of Greater Chicago. As a key member of our engineering team, you will be responsible for designing, maintaining, and constructing facilities necessary to collect, treat, and discharge wastewater.

Key Responsibilities
  • Supervise and review work, instruct and train subordinate engineers and technicians, and prepare work schedules.
  • Participate in the implementation and enforcement of District policies and procedures.
  • Review or prepare cost estimates, assist in budget preparation, and monitor expenditures.
  • Serve as resident engineer on engineering projects, overseeing the execution of construction projects, inspecting construction activities, and enforcing conformity with plans, specifications, and grant/permit requirements.
  • Administer and coordinate the equipment maintenance system, including the development of replacement schedules and the planning and monitoring of expenditures.
  • Coordinate and conduct engineering studies, tests, and analyses, and oversee the collection, calculation, and compilation of data and the preparation of various reports.
Requirements
  • Registration as a Professional Engineer in the State of Illinois.
  • Graduation from a four-year accredited college or university majoring in chemical, civil, environmental, sanitary, or structural engineering, and four years of full-time, post-degree civil engineering experience related to the District's activities.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Full-time graduate study in the designated fields of engineering may be substituted for the required experience on a year-for-year basis to a maximum of two years.
  • Civil service status in one of the foregoing classifications.
Working Conditions

May involve exposure to a variety of operating mechanical equipment and loud noise and/or noxious odors. May include working in all types of weather conditions throughout the plant facility and collection system. Typical office environment. May use standard office equipment and computer terminals.

Desirable Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
  • Thorough knowledge of professional civil engineering criteria as it applies to the design, construction, operation, and maintenance of sewage treatment plant facilities, sewer collection systems, and flood control systems.
  • Thorough knowledge of recent process control developments, current literature, and sources of information in civil engineering.
  • Considerable knowledge of the methods of supervising complex engineering design construction.
  • Ability to supervise field construction in accordance with plans and specifications.
  • Ability to criticize and evaluate professional civil engineering design work.
  • Ability to understand and interpret detailed construction schedules prepared by the critical path method.
  • Ability to develop detailed specifications, reports, and designs from general outline assignments.
  • Ability to utilize word processors, spreadsheets, database managers, and similar applications.
  • Ability to express oneself clearly and concisely, orally and in writing.
