Position Overview:

We are in search of a dedicated and skilled Animal Behavior Research Technician to join our team at Princeton University, specifically within the laboratory of Dr. Carlos Brody at the Princeton Neuroscience Institute. This role is situated in a collaborative environment focused on behavioral training of rodent models.

The Brody Lab investigates the neural foundations of cognitive functions, employing rodents as a model organism to explore decision-making, cognitive control, and working memory through a blend of computational and experimental methodologies.


Key Responsibilities:

- Conduct behavioral training for rodents on various tasks.
- Ensure the health and welfare of the rodents, which includes:
    o Performing health assessments and social interactions
    o Training and handling of animals
    o Basic husbandry responsibilities
    o Maintaining precise and comprehensive records and data
- Support the needs of faculty, students, and staff.
- Undertake additional laboratory tasks as required.

Qualifications:

- Must be capable of working in a laboratory setting with necessary protective gear, adhering to strict standard operating procedures.
- A high school diploma or equivalent is required, or certification as an animal technician (AALAS) or Assistant Laboratory Animal Technician (ALAT).
- Willingness to regularly handle and work with rodents is essential.
- Availability to work on weekends and holidays is required.
- Flexibility in scheduling for urgent laboratory needs is advantageous.
- Experience in basic soldering, computer programming, machining, or 3D printing is a plus.
- Ability to perform routine sound checks on laboratory equipment and machinery.
- Must be able to lift up to 50 lbs comfortably.

Physical Requirements:

This position necessitates a reasonable level of physical activity, including:
- Active movement while carrying weights of approximately 14 lbs for durations of 45-90 minutes, interspersed with seated tasks.
- Performing repetitive motions such as kneeling, bending, and climbing step stools.
- Regularly pushing and pulling large wheeled racks exceeding 50 lbs.
- Dexterity to manipulate small objects and the ability to communicate effectively.

Work Schedule:

This is a part-time position, anticipated at 20-30 hours per week, with flexibility in scheduling. Shifts will be organized on weekdays, weekends, and holidays.

Additional Information:

Exposure to various laboratory conditions, including malodorous vapors and potential contact with low-dose radiation and hazardous substances, is expected. The ideal candidate will be organized, reliable, and possess strong attention to detail and communication skills, capable of working independently or collaboratively with minimal supervision.
