This position encompasses dual responsibilities as a Surgical Technologist and Coordinator, specifically focusing on Orthopedic surgeries during the PM shift, alternating between surgical tech duties and coordination tasks.
The surgical team at Advocate Aurora Health caters to a diverse patient demographic, ranging from neonates to elderly individuals. Our facilities include multiple operating rooms equipped to handle various patient conditions, from outpatient procedures to intensive care cases. Our dedicated team comprises skilled registered nurses and surgical technologists, collaborating closely with environmental services and anesthesia technicians to ensure optimal patient care.
This role combines leadership and technical skills, dedicating equal time to both Surgical Technologist and Coordinator functions during the PM shift. The position includes on-call responsibilities, requiring availability for 1-2 nights per week, every 3-6 weekends, and 1-2 holidays annually.

Key Responsibilities:
- Serves as a resource for team members, including training, daily work direction, scheduling, and performance feedback. Oversees and evaluates work progress, providing guidance on complex issues.
- Assists with human resource functions, including interviewing, staff development, performance evaluations, and addressing employee concerns. Aids in developing processes and interpreting departmental policies.
- Acts as a mentor and role model for students and staff, participating in departmental committees and work teams.
- Contributes to the assessment and enhancement of patient care quality. Evaluates and recommends new products, technologies, and techniques, identifying opportunities for cost savings.
- Ensures a clean, safe, and efficient environment conducive to optimal patient care. Utilizes aseptic techniques in preparing materials and equipment for surgical procedures, anticipating the needs of the surgical team.
- Performs a variety of surgical procedures, maintaining advanced knowledge in multiple specialties. Functions as a First or Second Assistant as required, ensuring the operating room's safety and efficiency.
- Maintains specialty carts, ensuring equipment is in working order and sterile. Conducts quality assurance tests and reports any equipment malfunctions.
- Handles patient positioning and transportation, adhering to proper techniques for safety.
- Demonstrates knowledge and skills necessary to provide age-appropriate care, assessing patient data and interpreting information to meet individual needs.
- Basic Life Support (BLS) certification from the American Heart Association (AHA) must be obtained within 6 months unless otherwise determined by the department leader.
- Completion of an accredited program in Surgical Technology.
- Typically requires 5 years of experience in a Surgical Technologist role.
- Completion of a suturing class or equivalent military training.
- Proficient in all surgical specialties with expertise in at least two.
- Advanced knowledge of aseptic surgical techniques for various procedures.
- Demonstrated leadership skills, including delegation, team building, and problem-solving.
- Ability to anticipate and respond to the needs of the surgical team effectively.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills to collaborate with physicians, patients, and staff.
- Ability to thrive in a fast-paced and high-stress environment.
- Must be able to sit, stand, walk, lift, squat, bend, twist, and reach frequently throughout the workday.
- Must have functional sight and hearing capabilities.
- Required to operate equipment necessary for job functions.
- May be exposed to various hazards, including mechanical, electrical, chemical, and biological; protective equipment must be utilized as necessary.
