Job Summary

The Assistant Controller plays a crucial role in the accounting service area, assisting the Senior Director of Accounting in developing, implementing, and evaluating various activities. This position requires strong accounting knowledge, excellent communication skills, and the ability to work independently or as part of a team.

Key Responsibilities
  • Provide accounting guidance and direction to staff, ensuring accurate and timely financial reporting.
  • Maintain the fixed asset subsidiary ledger and perform monthly reconciliations to ensure accuracy and compliance.
  • Assist in maintaining the Chart of Accounts and preparing requests for the Chart of Accounts Review Committee (COARC).
  • Support the Senior Director of Accounting in completing monthly, quarterly, and yearly reconciliations, journal entries, and financial statement preparation.
  • Compile documents and other requested items for internal and external audits.
  • Attend monthly System Controller and state higher education meetings, as well as other required meetings.
Fiscal Operations
  • Manage and review daily activity of Fiscal Operations, ensuring proper internal controls and integrity of financial data.
  • Supervise and review work performed by Accounting, Payroll, and Accounts Payable staff.
Additional Functions
  • Work independently with minimal supervision or as part of a team.
  • Communicate effectively with students, colleagues, and others.
  • Interact professionally and respectfully with students, colleagues, and others.
  • Assess individual and department work processes and recommend improvements.
  • Comply with State Fiscal Rules, State Board policies, System and College protocols, and departmental procedures.
  • Obtain and maintain proficiency with required systems and equipment.
  • Maintain confidentiality of student and employee information as required.
  • Complete all required compliance training within the established timeline.
  • Serve on committees and other groups as assigned.
Requirements
  • Bachelor's degree in Accounting or related field.
  • At least one year of professional accounting experience in a medium-sized organization.
  • Experience with subsidiary and general ledger accounting, general ledger reconciliations, Excel spreadsheets, bank reconciliations, and journal entries.
  • Knowledge of Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP).
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office and working knowledge of Ellucian Banner.
