Job Overview

Objective:

The Horticulture Program at Lincoln University is seeking to fill 6 positions aimed at supporting farmers across various regions in Missouri, specifically in the Cameron and Kansas City areas. These are full-time roles with benefits, operating under the College of Agriculture, Environmental and Human Sciences. The positions are funded through grants with specific objectives to enhance the capacity of Lincoln University in research, extension, and promotion of USDA programs.

The selected candidates will collaborate closely with the State Horticulture Specialist, working remotely while serving three counties, including their county of residence and two neighboring counties. Responsibilities include recruiting a core group of 30 horticulture crop growers, assessing their needs, and establishing their success goals. The role involves conducting farm visits, organizing educational extension events such as workshops, conferences, webinars, and farm tours, as well as creating educational materials focused on crop production, marketing, and USDA programs that assist farmers.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Report directly to the State Horticulture Specialist.
  • Identify and engage horticulture producers within the designated counties, developing a comprehensive database to understand their needs and challenges.
  • Recruit and work closely with a group of 30 farmers, providing one-on-one support.
  • Facilitate farm visits, phone consultations, and email communications to offer technical assistance.
  • Organize and conduct educational events in areas such as crop production, protection, marketing, and USDA programs.
  • Create and distribute educational publications to aid farmers in enhancing their business operations.
  • Develop and release a monthly newsletter to keep stakeholders informed.
  • Collaborate with colleagues from Lincoln University, the University of Missouri, and USDA, contributing to the Missouri Agricultural Statistics Census.
  • Compile reports detailing the extension activities undertaken by the Horticulture Program.

Additional Skills and Requirements:

  • Proficiency in Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint for developing publications and presentations.
  • Ability to effectively use computers for communication and document management.
  • Experience with virtual meeting platforms such as Zoom for presentations and discussions.
  • A background in Crop Production, Crop Protection, Marketing, and Agricultural Technology is highly advantageous.
  • Strong oral and written communication skills, with a capacity to work collaboratively in a diverse team environment.

Qualifications:

  • A bachelor's degree in Horticulture or a related field is mandatory.
  • A master's degree in Horticulture or a related field is preferred.
  • Relevant technical experience in Horticulture and related disciplines is required.
  • A valid driving license is necessary.

Physical Requirements:

  • Ability to perform light office work.
  • Prolonged periods of sitting and working on a computer.
  • Capability to lift items weighing up to 25 lbs.
  • Willingness to work outdoors alongside farmers in the field.
