The National Arts Club, a distinguished not-for-profit organization, is in search of a skilled pastry cook to enhance our culinary team. The Club is home to a vibrant community of approximately 1950 members, including many of New York's most creative and artistic individuals. Our historic Clubhouse offers an elegant setting for exceptional dining experiences, featuring a beautifully appointed dining room, art galleries, and a diverse events calendar that includes lectures, discussions, and cultural events.

The Pastry Cook plays a vital role in a collaborative kitchen environment, working both independently and as part of a team. This position requires effective communication with various food and beverage personnel, including cooks, the pastry chef, and service staff, while overseeing the production of pastries for restaurant service, banquets, and other club functions. Additionally, the Pastry Cook will assist with general food production tasks as necessary, ensuring that quality, sanitation, and cost-efficiency standards are consistently met.

QUALIFICATIONS:

The ideal candidate will demonstrate a strong work ethic and a commitment to maintaining high culinary standards. Proficiency in crafting high-quality desserts while upholding an organized and professional kitchen environment is essential. Candidates must possess the following qualifications and be able to effectively perform the essential functions of the role:

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:

  • High school diploma or equivalent
  • Degree or certificate from an accredited pastry program is preferred
  • A minimum of 2 years of experience in pastry production
  • NYC Food Handler's License is preferred

SPECIFIC SKILLS AND ABILITIES:

  • Extensive knowledge of pastry and baking techniques, including methods, ingredients, and industry best practices
  • Strong decision-making, time-management, and organizational skills with a keen attention to detail
  • Ability to multitask and delegate effectively in a fast-paced environment

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:

  • Prepare pastries and desserts as directed by the Pastry Chef
  • Conduct daily inventory of all prepared items
  • Store and maintain products according to proper food handling protocols
  • Ensure accurate daily par levels for all prepared dessert items
  • Maintain efficient communication with the pastry chef throughout the day
  • Contribute innovative ideas for seasonal menu offerings
  • Keep the pastry station and walk-in organized and clean
  • Assist in other kitchen areas as required

PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

This position requires the employee to stand, walk, and communicate for extended periods. Frequent handling, reaching, and lifting of items up to 50 pounds are necessary. Vision requirements include close, color, and peripheral vision, along with the ability to adjust focus in a busy environment.
