Job Title: Casehandling Paralegal

CAMBA Legal Services is seeking a highly motivated and detail-oriented Casehandling Paralegal to join our team. As a Casehandling Paralegal, you will play a critical role in providing legal services to low-income New Yorkers in the areas of consumer law, foreclosure prevention, immigration, housing law, and domestic violence assistance.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Assist clients in completing intake applications and forms, ensuring accurate and timely submission.
  • Conduct legal intake and assessment of clients' situations and needs, documenting all relevant data in our data system.
  • May conduct home visits to perform intake and follow-up services, building strong relationships with clients and their families.
  • Assist clients in completing applications for fair hearings and other administrative proceedings, providing guidance and support throughout the process.
  • Process applications for charitable housing grants and conduct follow-up, ensuring timely and accurate processing.
  • Research and analyze law sources, including statutes, recorded judicial decisions, legal articles, and legal codes, to inform case decisions and strategies.
  • May draft or prepare legal documents, such as subpoenas, letters of advocacy, affidavits, stipulations, OSCs, motions, and forms for administrative hearings, ensuring accuracy and attention to detail.
  • Investigate facts and law of case to assist in determining causes of action/defenses and prepare case accordingly, providing expert analysis and recommendations.
  • May file motions, briefs, pleadings, legal memos, and appeals with the court clerk, copy court files, and/or serve papers on other parties, ensuring timely and accurate submission.
  • Maintain accurate and comprehensive document/client files, including up-to-date case note documentation, to ensure seamless case management.
  • Deliver or direct delivery of subpoenas to witnesses and parties to action, in accordance with all legal requirements, ensuring timely and accurate service.
  • Recommend and implement strategies to persuade clients to participate fully in their own legal process, building trust and rapport with clients and their families.
  • Act as client liaison/advocate to coordinate with internal and external programs and agencies, making referrals and ensuring integrated services delivery.
  • Assist clients in completing SCRIE and DRIE applications, providing guidance and support throughout the process.
  • Pickup checks from agencies and/or charities and deliver to the office, court, or office of opposing counsel, ensuring timely and accurate processing.
  • Assist in communication with HRA benefits, requesting benefits issuance printouts, checking application status, and ensuring seamless case management.
  • Assist in referral and client communication throughout the duration of intake and/or case, providing expert guidance and support.
  • Interpret for clients and staff as needed, translating documents, forms, and other materials to ensure accurate and timely communication.
  • May help with reporting and/or billing, ensuring accurate and timely submission.
  • May conduct outreach to the community to inform them of legal services and recruit clients, building strong relationships with community partners and stakeholders.
  • May maintain client data in relevant databases, ensuring accurate and timely entry.
  • May provide all required information for weekly/monthly/quarterly/annual reports, ensuring accurate and timely submission.
  • May provide group presentations to advise potential clients of their legal rights and responsibilities, building trust and rapport with clients and their families.
  • May assist with making Marshals' calls and updating Marshals' call list, ensuring timely and accurate communication.
  • May handle NYCHA and HRA hearings, providing expert guidance and support throughout the process.
  • Assist with HPD and HCR administrative proceedings, ensuring accurate and timely submission.
  • May assist existing CAMBA clients with FHEPS applications, and/or other types of rental arrears/subsidy applications, providing expert guidance and support.
Requirements:
  • Associate's Degree (A.A.) and two years applicable experience or Bachelor's degree (B. A. or B.S.) and/or equivalent experience.
Preferred Qualifications:
  • Bilingual (Spanish/Haitian Creole) preferred.
Compensation:

$53,639 - $83,528 annually

When salary ranges are listed, the range would represent the low and high end for the applicable position & program. The salary offered would be based on various factors unique to each program and candidate. This includes but is not limited to experience, education, budget and/or program size, internal equity, skills and other factors that may be required for the position and organization.
