Aquatic Safety Educator

Position Overview

Status: Ongoing part-time role, non-exempt

Hours: Flexible and variable

Compensation: Starting at $16.00 per hour, based on qualifications

Location: Pool facilities in Eden Prairie

Reporting Structure: Reports to the Aquatics Recreation Supervisor

Recreation Services Division

The Recreation Services Division is tasked with overseeing all recreational facilities and delivering a diverse range of affordable programs and services for individuals of all ages and abilities. Staff members manage facilities such as the Community Center, Senior Center, Outdoor Center, and various City park buildings, including swimming beaches and school property facilities operated in collaboration with the School District.

Key Responsibilities

The Aquatic Safety Educator is responsible for supervising and ensuring safety at Eden Prairie pools. The primary duties include:
  1. Assisting the Head Lifeguard in overseeing the operation of beaches and pools to fulfill community needs, ensuring a safe, clean, and well-maintained environment.
  2. Enforcing all pool and beach regulations consistently and professionally.
  3. Conducting facility safety inspections and documenting findings.
  4. Providing swimming instruction for participants ranging from 6 months to adults, adhering to American Red Cross standards.
While these responsibilities are central to the role, teamwork is highly valued, and employees may be required to perform various tasks as part of their duties.

Qualifications

Education: Water Safety Instructor (WSI) certification is mandatory; must conduct swimming lessons in line with the American Red Cross Learn to Swim Program. Certifications are necessary for this position, but applicants do not need to be certified to apply. Training will be provided upon hiring.

Availability: Must be willing to work evenings and weekends.

Age Requirement: Candidates must be at least 15 years old. Note that 15-year-olds will need a lifeguard certification in addition to WSI.

Physical Demands: Must demonstrate the ability to swim all strokes as per American Red Cross guidelines, swim a minimum of 500 yards continuously, and lift and move objects. Candidates selected for interviews will be required to complete and pass the City's skills assessment prior to receiving a conditional job offer.
