We are looking for a Senior Safety Manager who will be responsible for directing and effectively managing safety protocols within our clinical laboratory environments, ensuring a secure and incident-free workplace.
Key Responsibilities:
- Develop, execute, and oversee a robust safety program that guarantees equipment, processes, and personnel actions foster a safe and accident-free work environment.
- Ensure adherence to all relevant regulatory safety standards across laboratory departments, including cell culture, molecular, NGS, histology, biorepository, and nucleotide extraction laboratories.
- Continuously enhance the safety program by analyzing historical safety data and integrating current safety procedures and tools.
- Act as the authority on the interpretation, application, and compliance with regulatory and industry safety standards, including OSHA, CAP/CLIA, NYS, FDA, ISO, EPA, and DOT.
- Collaborate with leadership to design and implement effective safety training programs for new hires, annual re-training, and department-specific training.
- Oversee safety committees and safety officers across all laboratory sites.
- Establish and manage an internal safety audit program.
- Conduct regular internal audits at each laboratory to ensure compliance and consistent application of safety policies.
- Manage inspections from relevant regulatory agencies.
- Supervise the execution of emergency response and fire drills within laboratory departments.
- Serve as the Chemical Hygiene Officer, responsible for all related duties.
- Develop and implement a comprehensive Chemical Hygiene Plan across all laboratories.
- Establish a process for investigating and preventing safety-related incidents.
- Work collaboratively with cross-functional teams to develop and support Tempus' Emergency Response plan.
- Oversee the reporting system for incidents, injuries, and near-misses, ensuring timely and accurate documentation.
- Conduct root cause analyses for incidents and injuries, implementing effective corrective actions.
- Design initiatives to strengthen a 'Safety First' culture in collaboration with employees, laboratory leadership, and HR teams.
- Proactively identify and mitigate potential hazards in laboratory settings.
- Review, revise, and maintain safety policies for laboratory departments.
- Ensure compliance with state and federal guidelines for the use and disposal of chemicals and biohazardous materials.
- Coordinate with hazardous waste disposal vendors.
- Ensure timely submission of all required internal and external reports.
- Develop and implement safety policies and procedures for warehouse and inventory control.
- Conduct timely safety assessments across laboratory facilities.
Qualifications:
- Bachelor's degree in Occupational Safety, Industrial Hygiene, Natural Sciences, or a related field required; Certified Safety Professional (CSP) preferred.
- 5+ years of experience in a clinical laboratory setting.
- 5+ years of experience in implementing occupational safety programs with knowledge of state and federal safety regulations.
- Experience in creating and executing emergency action plans.
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
- Required supervisory experience.
- Demonstrated initiative and accountability for personal actions and results.
- Ability to write effectively, deliver clear presentations, and conduct productive meetings.
- Commitment to achieving total safety excellence.
- Willingness to travel approximately 50% of the time.
- Ability to thrive in a fast-paced environment.
