Job Summary

The Natural Resources Defense Council Inc is seeking a Director, Budget and Operations to join our Communications Department in New York City or Washington, D.C. office. This role will oversee the operations responsibilities of the Communications team and provide strategic guidance to senior leaders. The Director, Budget and Operations will manage a team of four staff and be responsible for budget and grant management, contract management, staff training, and coordinating with Communications team managers on Human Resources matters. This position will also work closely with colleagues in HR, Finance, Accounting, and Development to ensure effective resource allocation, financial management, and compliance with NRDC-wide policies and best practices.

Key Responsibilities

  • Oversee income and grant management for the Communications Department, tracking, reporting, and managing all departmental income and working with budget code managers to ensure tight adherence to budgets.
  • Streamline and manage the annual expense budgeting process for Communications, including grant spending, and ensure that budget, capacity, and resource allocations align with priorities.
  • Produce regular reports on expense tracking, develop systems, templates, and tools for regular and consistent reporting on budgets to managers and throughout the Communications Department.
  • Train others on budget management systems and processes to ensure strong budgeting and tracking throughout the department.
  • Work closely with vendors to ensure that contracts are renegotiated on a regular basis and that vendors are onboarded to NRDC's systems and processes.
  • Ensure that institutional policies, procedures, and initiatives are understood and put into practice by the Comms team.


Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in a relevant field.
  • Minimum 8 years of relevant experience, plus minimum 2 years of experience managing people and/or a team.
  • And/or equivalent combination of education and experience.

Salary is based on a nonprofit scale and is commensurate with skills and experience. For this position, the salary range is $141,000 to $155,500. We also offer a hybrid work model, with purposeful presence in the office, and a commitment to containing the COVID-19 public health crisis by asking employees to be vaccinated unless they have an approved medical or religious accommodation or other exemption.
