Job Summary

The Metropolitan Water Reclamation District of Greater Chicago is seeking a skilled Electrical Mechanic to join our team. As an Electrical Mechanic, you will be responsible for the installation, maintenance, and repair of electrical circuits, apparatus, machinery, and equipment in our water reclamation plants, pumping stations, and sewage collection control structures.

Key Responsibilities

  • Install, troubleshoot, repair, adjust, and maintain electrical equipment and controls in water reclamation plants, pumping stations, and sewage collection control structures.
  • Maintain, troubleshoot, and repair motor vehicle electrical systems and components.
  • Perform necessary rigging in handling equipment and operate cranes, hoists, sludge diggers, and bridges to expedite installation and repair work.
  • Lay out raceways by bending, cutting, threading heavy wall conduit, flexible conduit, and EMT and cable trays. Install conduit fittings and pull boxes. Pull wire/cable and make terminations to complete electrical installations in a workmanlike manner.
  • Install and remove hold cards to de-energize, isolate, and clear electrical systems operating at 600 volts or less as necessary to protect equipment and personnel.

Other Responsibilities

  • Be responsible for the custody and care of all tools and equipment used in performing electrical mechanic work.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Working Conditions

Typical duties involve exposure to industrial equipment or operations, including working near operating mechanical equipment and loud noise. Duties may also involve working in close proximity to or in conjunction with construction activities. Work may be performed in a variety of weather conditions and may involve working in confined spaces or at heights. Duties could include contact with hazardous or toxic materials and exposure to noxious odors.

Requirements

  • Graduation from a standard senior high school or the equivalent and completion of an approved apprentice training program for Electrical Mechanics, or an equivalent combination of experience and training totaling five years.
  • Considerable knowledge of the principles, practices, and procedures of the electrical trade.
  • Considerable knowledge of the national electrical code and other relevant codes and regulations.
  • Considerable knowledge of the occupational hazards and safety precautions of the work.
  • Skill in the use and care of the equipment and tools of the trade.
  • Ability to plan, lay out, install, and repair wiring, electrical fixtures, apparatus, and control equipment.
  • Ability to make electrical repairs to motor vehicles.
  • Ability to read electrical schematics and wiring diagrams.
  • Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions.
