Job Summary

The University of California, San Francisco (UCSF) is seeking a highly motivated and dedicated individual to join our team as a Pathways Fellow. This 13-month training program is designed for individuals interested in starting a career in public health by working at a local health department in California.

About the Pathways Fellowship

The Pathways Fellowship is an innovative paid training program that provides training, support, and work experience for individuals from historically underrepresented and diverse backgrounds. Our mission is to increase the workforce capacity of local health departments across California by providing opportunities for individuals to develop their skills and knowledge in public health.

Responsibilities
  • Develop relationships and communicate with individuals in a professional and empathetic manner, maintaining emotional and cultural awareness
  • Work effectively and build trust with a wide range of diverse individuals, including all ages and from a wide range of social and economic backgrounds
  • Effectively communicate in English both verbally and in writing, with the ability to contribute to clear and concise reports, presentations, and documentation
  • Manage tasks independently, with guidance and supervision, and know when to ask for support from supervisor and/or preceptors
  • Work in-person and travel locally within the host site local health department per the jurisdiction protocol
Requirements
  • Bachelor's degree in a related field; and/or equivalent experience/training (e.g. Associate's degree + 2 years work experience; high school diploma/GED + 4 years work experience)
  • Ability to develop relationships and communicate with individuals in a professional and empathetic manner, maintaining emotional and cultural awareness
  • Strong interpersonal skills for collaboration with clients, community members, and community organizations
  • Ability to work effectively and build trust with a wide range of diverse individuals
  • Ability to effectively communicate in English both verbally and in writing
  • Skilled in the use of a personal computer and basic software applications (Microsoft Word, Outlook, Teams, and/or Zoom)
  • Basic organizational skills and the ability to effectively manage time, prioritize tasks, and meet assigned deadlines
