We are seeking a highly skilled and experienced professional to serve as the Director of Planning and Zoning for the City of Somerville. This is a key leadership position that requires a strong understanding of urban planning, zoning regulations, and community development.
Key Responsibilities- Lead and direct the Planning, Preservation, and Zoning Division in the development and implementation of long-range planning, ordinance development, and permit administration functions.
- Supervise staff and provide guidance on planning and zoning matters, including the Historic Preservation Commission, Planning Board, Urban Design Commission, and Zoning Board of Appeals.
- Develop and maintain relationships with community stakeholders, including elected officials, advocacy organizations, and neighborhood groups.
- Prepare and manage the Division's annual budget, grants, and other financing, and track and assess financial performance.
- Make strategic decisions about personnel and financial resource allocation, hiring, evaluation, and promotion of staff, and selection of consultants.
- Bachelor's degree and five to seven years of experience in urban planning, zoning administration, or a related field.
- Thorough knowledge of zoning and land use regulations, urban planning principles, and community development practices.
- Excellent written and oral communication skills, with ability to communicate effectively with diverse stakeholders.
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team, with strong problem-solving and analytical skills.
