Position Overview:
The Commonwealth of Virginia is seeking a qualified individual to join the Biological Threat Emergency Response (BTER) Group as a Scientist I. This team is dedicated to providing round-the-clock public health emergency testing. The BTER Group is responsible for rapid molecular, conventional culture, and immunological testing aimed at identifying bioterrorism agents, emerging pathogens, and other infectious agents that pose significant public health risks.
Key Responsibilities:
- Accessioning and processing human clinical specimens and environmental samples within biosafety level-3 (BSL-3) laboratories.
- Conducting testing and documenting analyses performed.
- Implementing quality assurance (QA) and quality control (QC) procedures.
- Preparing testing reagents and troubleshooting laboratory equipment.
- Assisting in the development, validation, and implementation of new testing methodologies.
- Packaging and shipping infectious materials as required.
- Participating in an on-call rotation for emergency response testing of potentially hazardous materials.
Work Schedule:
This position requires flexibility, including weekend, holiday, and after-hours work as necessary.

Minimum Qualifications:
- Compliance with Clinical Laboratory Improvement Amendments (CLIA) for high complexity-testing laboratories.
- Knowledge of laboratory safety protocols and microbiological sciences.
- Effective communication skills, both oral and written.
- Ability to adapt and work efficiently in a fast-paced environment.
- Capacity to work independently and as part of a team.
- Willingness to work weekends and provide on-call coverage.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Experience in a BSL-3 laboratory environment.
- Familiarity with Select Agents and Polymerase Chain Reaction (PCR) testing.
- Proficiency in conventional microbiological procedures and immunoassays.
- Experience with laboratory information management systems (LIMS).
Additional Information:
Selected candidates will undergo background checks and health clearances to work with select agents. Training for blood-borne pathogens and respiratory protection standards will be provided. The position requires compliance with all safety protocols and vaccination requirements as applicable.
