POSITION OVERVIEW

Under general supervision, the individual will engage in a range of semi-skilled and limited skilled manual tasks aimed at the upkeep and enhancement of public works and recreational facilities. This role involves operating various vehicles and equipment, including both light and heavy-duty motorized machinery. The employee may also take on leadership responsibilities over a team of assistants while executing diverse maintenance tasks relevant to their designated area.

This position encompasses maintenance duties across several divisions, including but not limited to: Parks and Medians, Streets, Sewers and Storm Drains, Street Lighting, Traffic Safety, Building Maintenance, and Equipment Maintenance. Assignments may vary based on departmental needs.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

The individual will be responsible for:

  • Conducting semi-skilled maintenance and repair work on various municipal facilities and structures, including streets, parks, and sewer systems.
  • Constructing forms for sidewalks, curbs, or drainage basins.
  • Assisting in the mixing, pouring, and finishing of concrete.
  • Excavating trenches, laying pipes, and connecting sewer laterals.
  • Repairing sewer manholes and clearing sewer lines.
  • Painting traffic lines and markings.
  • Installing and maintaining traffic signs and signals.
  • Performing USA markings on city streets.
  • Pruning and caring for shrubs and trees.
  • Operating and maintaining construction and maintenance equipment and power tools.
  • Installing and maintaining playground equipment.
  • Conducting general maintenance duties inside and outside of buildings, including painting and removing graffiti.
  • Performing carpentry and repairs on various building components and systems.
  • Ordering necessary supplies and materials.

QUALIFICATIONS

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:

The ideal candidate will possess knowledge of:

  • Methods and techniques of general construction, maintenance, and repair.
  • Common tools, equipment, materials, and practices used in public works and park maintenance.
  • Traffic control practices and procedures.
  • Record-keeping principles and safety practices.

The candidate should also demonstrate the ability to:

  • Operate and perform minor repairs on city vehicles and equipment.
  • Engage in various maintenance, construction, and repair tasks.
  • Perform heavy manual labor.
  • Read and write effectively.
  • Follow both written and verbal instructions.
  • Establish and maintain effective working relationships.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE

A combination of training and experience that provides the required knowledge and abilities is essential. A typical pathway to acquiring this knowledge includes:

Graduation from high school and two years of diverse experience in maintenance or construction work, including some semi-skilled tasks and equipment operation.

LICENSES/CERTIFICATES

A valid Class C California Driver's License with a safe driving record is required and must be maintained throughout employment.

WORKING CONDITIONS

The role involves outdoor work, requiring travel between sites and exposure to various environmental conditions. Employees may encounter noise, dust, and hazardous traffic conditions while performing duties. Physical demands include the ability to walk, stand, and sit for extended periods, as well as lift and carry moderate to heavy weights.
