Position Overview:
The Surgical Services Manager oversees the daily operations of designated units within the Surgical Services division, which may encompass either inpatient settings or Ambulatory Surgical Centers (ASCs). Key Responsibilities:
CLINICAL MANAGEMENT:
- Serves as a knowledgeable resource and exemplary model for staff. Develops, revises, and assesses policies and procedures aligned with clinical practice standards.
- Ensures that care delivery within the unit adheres to these standards through competency assessments conducted at the time of hiring and on an ongoing basis.
- Utilizes quality metrics to guarantee safe procedural care for patients in the perioperative and interventional settings.
- Encourages continuous education and professional development for both self and staff, remaining informed about practice advancements and sharing updates with the team.
- Conducts interviews, recruitment, and hiring of nursing staff. Performs performance evaluations.
- Provides counseling to employees and addresses disciplinary issues as necessary.
- Ensures staff possess the necessary knowledge and skills to deliver safe and appropriate patient care through education, coaching, and experiential learning.
- Establishes and maintains staffing patterns for the unit. Coordinates and leads staff meetings and unit-based teams.
- Fosters interdepartmental collaboration to support the mission, vision, and objectives of the department and organization.
- Exhibits critical thinking skills and collaborates effectively, even in challenging situations and discussions.
- Promotes a culture of innovative thinking and problem-solving, acting as a change agent to challenge existing practices.
- Meets established deadlines and engages in self-reflection.
- Escalates issues to the appropriate stakeholders as needed.
- Builds and maintains collaborative relationships with providers and leaders within the organization.

- Supports the quality improvement plan and effectively communicates it to staff.
- Develops departmental strategies with a focus on quality that adapt to evolving healthcare delivery models.
- Investigates quality concerns within the department, documents findings, and reports issues to relevant parties within the organization.
- Collaborates with business managers or directors to formulate a budget that considers labor costs and inventory expenses based on historical and projected data.
- Manages labor and inventory efficiently while adhering to budget constraints.
- Identifies budget variances and implements corrective actions.
- Assesses capital equipment needs for the department, including requests from surgeons and anesthesia providers.
- Prioritizes departmental needs when capital resources are limited.
- Educates staff on departmental budgetary objectives and promotes cost-effective practices.
- Facilitates a cooperative and efficient work environment through consistent interpretation and application of contractual guidelines.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
- Minimum of five (5) years of clinical experience as a Registered Nurse, with at least two (2) years in Perioperative Services.
- At least two (2) years of leadership experience in the healthcare sector.
- Bachelor's degree in Nursing or a related field, or currently enrolled in a BSN or related program with a defined completion date.
- Registered Nurse License (Oregon).
- Basic Life Support certification within one month of hire.
- At least two (2) years of Critical Care experience (MPU or SPA/PACU only).
- A minimum of four (4) years of prior management experience in a similar role or acute care environment.
- Five (5) years of demonstrated expertise in the relevant clinical area.
- Certification in a specialty area (CNOR, CPAN, etc.).
- Knowledge of the Nurse Practice Act, The Joint Commission standards, Labor Law, and all related contracts and policies.
- Understanding of financial and economic principles.
- Strong communication skills.
- Master's degree preferred.
