Job Summary

Michigan State University is seeking a highly skilled and dedicated Police Officer to join our team. As a Police Officer, you will be responsible for maintaining law and order, preventing crime, and protecting the safety and well-being of students, faculty, staff, and visitors on campus.

Key Responsibilities
  • Patrol campus grounds on foot, motorcycle, bicycle, or patrol vehicle, utilizing state laws and university ordinances to ensure public safety.
  • Preserve law and order, prevent crime, and protect life and property of individuals on campus.
  • Affect arrests, forcibly if necessary, using handcuffs and other restraints in accordance with department-approved tactics.
  • Pursue fleeing subjects on foot, bicycle, or patrol vehicle in accordance with department policy and procedure.
  • Perform investigations and conduct legal searches of individuals to detect potential weapons or illegal contraband.
  • Operate emergency vehicles during day and night shift hours, exercising due care and caution in emergency and pursuit situations.
  • Communicate clearly and effectively over law enforcement radio channels while responding to calls for service and self-initiating activity.
  • Load, aim, and fire handguns, rifles, and other agency-specific firearms from various positions in training and real-life scenarios.
  • Maintain composure during rapidly evolving situations involving potentially uncooperative subjects.
  • Deescalate situations using proper verbal commands and articulating and acting upon situations that require elevating use of force within department policy and procedure.
  • Prepare written reports using proper spelling and grammar, and possess reasonable computer skills to utilize various software programs.
  • Participate in community team policing functions, such as office hours, programs, and events, to strengthen our bond with the community.
  • Attend training sessions, including legal updates, defensive tactics, firearms, and other annual training requirements.
  • Physically exert oneself in the performance of police officer duties, including climbing stairs, jumping over walls, running, bending, twisting, reaching, crawling, kneeling, sitting for prolonged periods, and moving/pushing/pulling/lifting heavy objects/persons.
  • Accept and understand the nature of law enforcement as a 24-hour on-call profession for emergencies.
Requirements
  • Knowledge equivalent to a four-year college degree program or attainment of degree within six months of hire.
  • Related and progressively more responsible work experience or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Meet all MCOLES Employment Standards for Michigan Law Enforcement Officers.
  • Be certified as a Police Officer in the State of Michigan, certifiable as a Police Officer in the State of Michigan, subject to verification or re-verification by a Michigan Commission on Law Enforcement Standards (MCOLES) approved training academy, or currently enrolled in an MCOLES approved training academy and certifiable by date of hire.
  • Be at least 21 years of age.
  • Possess a Bachelor's Degree from an accredited higher education institution.
  • Not have any prior felony arrest or convictions, involved in domestic assault as a suspect, alcohol-related arrests, or two or more misdemeanor appearances within the last five years.
  • Have good moral character as determined by a favorable comprehensive background investigation.
