Job Title: Cast Specialist

At UTHealth, we are seeking a skilled Cast Specialist to join our team of healthcare professionals. As a Cast Specialist, you will play a vital role in delivering patient care and assuming responsibilities concerning all casting duties.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Prepare, apply, remove, and adjust casts and splints as advised by physicians.
  • Assist with procedures, including wound care and fracture reductions as advised by physicians.
  • Prepare and apply orthopedic appliances, including durable medical equipment such as pre-operative braces, crutches, and other soft goods.
  • Conduct specialized measurements for custom brace fitting.
  • Instruct patients in cast care and use of orthopedic appliances.
  • Prepare traction and rigs pulleys, ropes, and frames to assemble fracture beds as requested by physicians.
  • Assess patients in traction, detect deficiencies in equipment, and make adjustments as needed.
  • Responsible for cleaning and stocking the cast and soft goods room.
  • Responsible for ordering special supplies or equipment, including DME, to maintain inventory appropriate with patient volume.
  • Assist in maintaining a clean and safe environment.
  • Practices positive customer and peer relations.
  • Respects and supports patient rights.
  • Participates in and supports continuous quality improvement activities at the clinic/departmental level.
  • Demonstrates acceptable productivity and practices cost containment.
  • Functions as an interdependent and supportive team member.
Requirements:
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) certification.
  • A strong knowledge of anatomy, physiology, and medical terminology.
  • Expertise in the different materials and equipment involved in casts, splints, and braces.
  • Considerable knowledge of casting materials is necessary.
  • Reasonable experience in clinic operations series is desirable.
