The responsibilities of a law enforcement officer include enforcing laws and regulations to safeguard the public and property, thereby enhancing the quality of life for residents and visitors. Officers are expected to deliver law enforcement services, including conducting investigations, traffic enforcement, crime prevention, and general policing duties.
Facilitates the development of public trust and confidence in the City.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES
The following duties are illustrative for this position. The omission of specific duties does not exclude them from the classification if the work is similar, related, or a logical assignment for this classification. Other duties may be required and assigned.
- Upholds the mission, vision, and values of the City of Port St. Lucie and Police Department; fosters strategic relationships and interacts with the community to build trust; delivers excellent service by taking proactive measures to achieve objectives and maintains high productivity through innovative solutions.
- Safeguards life and property through the enforcement of laws and regulations; actively patrols designated areas to ensure community safety.
- Works various shifts, which may include Day, Evening, or Midnight shifts, depending on assignment.
- Patrols assigned areas on foot, by motorcycle, bicycle, patrol car, or unmarked vehicle to enforce laws, prevent crime, investigate incidents, maintain order, and ensure peace.
- Responds to emergency calls and citizen requests for police assistance.
- Operates a law enforcement vehicle under emergency conditions, including exceeding speed limits and navigating hazardous road conditions.
- Possesses the ability to handle firearms and other weapons under stressful conditions, meeting proficiency standards set by the Florida Department of Law Enforcement (FDLE).
- Communicates effectively with the public, including vulnerable populations such as the elderly and youth.
- Exhibits independent judgment in assessing situations to determine reasonable suspicion, detention, search, arrest, and appropriate use of force.
- Conducts thorough searches of individuals, vehicles, and locations in accordance with policy.
- Locates and detains suspects following established procedures, using appropriate restraints as outlined by policy.
- Engages in surveillance operations for extended periods.
- Pursues fleeing suspects and performs rescue operations, which may involve physical exertion and navigating obstacles.
- Reads and comprehends legal documents, prepares reports, and maintains accurate records.
- Responds to emergencies, directs traffic, administers first aid, and assists victims in crisis situations.
- Utilizes police communication and computer systems to gather and disseminate information.
- Engages with the community to promote crime prevention and address neighborhood concerns.
- Documents incidents and investigations thoroughly, and testifies in court as needed.
- Trains and utilizes K-9 units when designated.
- Other duties as assigned.

EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE
Graduation from an accredited high school or possession of an acceptable equivalency diploma is required. A Bachelor's degree from an accredited institution is preferred. Military service with an honorable discharge is required. Completion of the Minimum Standards courses as set forth by the Florida Department of Law Enforcement is mandatory.
CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS
- Eligibility for Florida Law Enforcement Certification is required.
- Enrollment in or completion of a Criminal Justice Training Centers (CJSTC) Law Enforcement Academy is required.
- Possession of a valid Florida Driver's License and maintenance of a clean driving record is required.
- Understanding of federal, state, and local laws and regulations.
- Ability to analyze situations quickly and determine appropriate actions.
- Ability to handle situations firmly and courteously, respecting the rights of others.
- Familiarity with the geography and demographics of the City.
- Ability to follow oral and written instructions effectively.
- Strong communication skills, both written and verbal.
- Ability to meet physical requirements and standards.
- Ability to build and maintain effective relationships with colleagues and the public.
- Ability to remain composed under pressure and meet deadlines.
