Job Overview:

Shift: Tour 1: 12 a.m - 8 a.m

Role Purpose:

Under the guidance of a supervisor, the Clinical Laboratory Specialist is tasked with the daily execution of testing procedures, processing blood product orders, and fulfilling other essential responsibilities to ensure smooth laboratory operations. This role involves collaboration with various laboratory sections and departments to guarantee the highest standard of patient care.

Key Responsibilities:

The Clinical Laboratory Specialist is responsible for:

  1. Conducting daily testing procedures, including but not limited to: ABO Grouping & Rh Typing, Direct Antiglobulin Testing, Antibody Screen Testing, Antibody Identification, Fetal Bleed Screening, Antigen Typing, Antibody Elution, Crossmatch Testing, Donor Unit Retyping, and Transfusion Reaction Work-up.
  2. Adhering to laboratory protocols for specimen management, test analysis, reporting, and record maintenance, while being knowledgeable about relevant policies and procedures.
  3. Performing tests that necessitate independent judgment and responsibility, with minimal oversight from the director or supervisor, in areas where qualifications are met through education, training, and experience.
  4. Maintaining documentation that verifies proficiency-testing samples are treated similarly to patient specimens, following safety and quality control protocols, and recording all quality control activities.
  5. Complying with established laboratory policies when test systems fall outside acceptable performance levels.
  6. Identifying and addressing issues that may negatively impact test performance or result reporting, promptly notifying the supervisor or director when necessary.
  7. Documenting all corrective measures taken when test systems deviate from established performance criteria.
  8. Communicating ongoing tasks and requirements to colleagues and supervisors to prevent safety and patient care issues, ensuring timely completion of tasks for efficient laboratory operations.
  9. Reporting problems and significant issues to the supervisor promptly, ensuring that test results are not communicated until corrective actions are implemented and the test system is functioning correctly.
  10. Adhering to all safety and HIPAA regulations while maintaining care environment standards.
  11. Participating in Quality Assurance and Performance Improvement programs, following laboratory and hospital safety protocols, and reporting/documenting critical results to the appropriate medical personnel.
  12. Collaborating effectively with colleagues to achieve institutional goals.
  13. Monitoring environmental conditions and documenting lot numbers and expiration dates of testing materials used.
  14. Accurately recording results in the Laboratory Information System (LIS), complying with safety and HIPAA regulations, and maintaining care environment standards.
  15. Performing additional duties as assigned or as necessary for patient welfare or efficient hospital operations.

Minimum Qualifications:

1. A valid license as a clinical laboratory technologist issued by the NYSED; and

2. A minimum of one year of full-time paid experience as a technologist performing relevant tests and analyses in a clinical laboratory as defined in Title V, Section 57 1 of the New York State Public Health Law.
