Position Overview

Under the supervision of a registered nurse, the Practical Nursing Specialist delivers essential nursing care to students with complex medical requirements. This role involves executing both routine and specialized procedures as prescribed by medical professionals. The specialist is responsible for providing initial medical assistance and addressing the health needs of students as outlined in the School Health Services Manual.

Key Responsibilities

1. Administers routine and prescribed medical procedures, including but not limited to: gastric tube feedings, respiratory treatments, glucose monitoring, urinary catheterizations, and tracheostomy care.

2. Evaluates and tracks student health conditions through assessments, screenings, examinations, and observations.

3. Provides basic medical assistance and addresses student health needs in accordance with the School Health Services Manual.

4. Maintains accurate medical records, logs, and schedules regarding diagnoses, treatments, and any adverse reactions.

5. Dispenses prescription and over-the-counter medications to students in compliance with relevant laws and school health policies.

6. Aids students, school staff, and parents in understanding and managing a student's health condition.

7. Collaborates with health and educational teams to design interventions aimed at preventing further health complications.

8. Facilitates Telehealth consultations for students.

9. Performs additional duties as assigned.

Probation Period: Six (6) months

Qualifications

Minimum Requirements: Must possess a valid Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN) license from the Florida State Board of Nursing or have graduated from an accredited Practical Nursing program with authorization to practice as an LPN in Florida. This licensure must be maintained throughout employment.

Licensing: Candidates must secure LPN licensure from the Florida State Board of Nursing prior to appointment and maintain it during employment. CPR certification is also required prior to appointment and must be kept current.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • In-depth understanding of practical nursing principles and techniques.
  • Familiarity with clinical procedures, instruments, and medication effects.
  • Knowledge of childhood health issues.
  • Proficient in First Aid and CPR.
  • Ability to effectively use medical equipment such as glucometers and nebulizers.
  • Strong communication skills, both verbal and written.
  • Basic proficiency in word processing, spreadsheets, and database management.
  • Ability to administer treatments tailored to individual student needs.
  • Capability to initiate emergency procedures when necessary.
  • Ability to foster positive relationships with students, parents, and colleagues.
  • Proficient in maintaining accurate records and reports.
  • Ability to manage inventory and order supplies as needed.
  • Strong organizational and time management skills.
  • Physical capability to assist in moving and positioning students for medical procedures.
