Role Summary

The Outpatient Dietitian (RDN) plays a vital role within a multidisciplinary care team, offering nutritional guidance and education to patients.

This position primarily involves consulting with patients, either individually or in group settings, to provide education, assessment, documentation, and the development, implementation, and coordination of outpatient nutrition programs aimed at optimizing health outcomes.

As a Certified Diabetes Care and Education Specialist (CDCES), the Outpatient Dietitian will also deliver diabetes self-management education and training to individuals and groups in an outpatient context, adhering to established standards of practice.

This role is assigned to specific programs or projects, ensuring that nutrition services align with established best practices and comply with relevant regulations.

Collaboration with management and staff is essential to promote Hackensack Meridian Health as a leading authority in nutrition.

The position also involves working with pediatric patients.

Key Responsibilities

A typical day for an Outpatient Dietitian - Diabetes at Hackensack Meridian Health includes:

1. Assessing patients' nutritional requirements and current health plans to formulate and implement nutrition care strategies.

2. Collaborating with physicians and healthcare professionals to evaluate health, environmental, and cultural factors that may impact patients' nutritional needs.

3. Developing personalized dietary recommendations for individuals and groups managing chronic health conditions such as diabetes, cardiac issues, hypertension, and obesity.

4. Educating patients and their families on nutritional principles, dietary plans, modifications, and healthy food choices based on medical history.

5. Instructing patients and families on the use of nutritional supplements and other products for chronic disease management.

6. Coordinating nutrition counseling services.

7. Planning and conducting training programs in dietetics, nutrition, and management for staff, healthcare personnel, and the public.

8. Planning appropriate interventions and following up with patients.

9. Utilizing reliable sources for information on diets, nutrition, therapeutic treatments, and consumer trends to enhance services and propose new initiatives that promote client well-being.

10. Serving as a public relations representative and media spokesperson for nutrition-related topics.

11. Acting as a nutrition expert consultant for various medical center programs.

12. Monitoring and evaluating the effectiveness of nutrition education and training initiatives.

13. Implementing performance improvement strategies based on program outcomes.

14. Assisting with program development and marketing efforts.

15. Traveling within the medical center campus and/or off-site locations as necessary.

16. Serving as a Preceptor to Dietetic Interns and Students.

17. Performing other duties and projects as assigned.

18. Adhering to organizational competencies and standards of behavior.

Qualifications

Required Education, Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

• Bachelor's Degree in Nutrition or equivalent education that meets the Commission on Dietetic Registration requirements for certification (Registered Dietitian Nutritionist).

• Minimum of 2 years of experience in one-on-one and group nutrition counseling.

• Comprehensive understanding of medical nutrition therapy principles and practices, as well as the medical management of chronic health conditions.

• Demonstrated interest in community medicine.

• Ability to connect with and educate patients from diverse cultural backgrounds.

• Flexibility to work evenings and host seminars/classes as needed.

• Capacity to prioritize tasks and manage pressure effectively.

• Strong written and verbal communication skills for effective interaction with individuals at all organizational levels.

• Proficient in computer skills, including Microsoft Office and/or Google Suite platforms.

Preferred Education, Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

• Master's degree in nutrition or dietetics from an accredited institution.

• Minimum of 2 years of experience in acute care clinical settings.

• Familiarity with HealthTouch and EPIC systems.

• Experience and comfort with public speaking.

• Bilingual in English and Spanish.

Licenses and Certifications Required:

• Current registration with the Commission on Dietetic Registration (CDR) and maintenance of 75 continuing education credits every 5 years in nutrition counseling and medical nutrition therapy.

• Certification by the National Certification Board of Diabetes Educators.
