Role Summary

The Outpatient Dietitian (RDN) plays a vital role within a multidisciplinary care team, providing essential nutrition education and care to patients.

The primary function of the Outpatient Dietitian is to serve as a consultant, delivering personalized education to patients through individual sessions or group classes. This includes thorough evaluation, documentation, and the development, implementation, and coordination of an outpatient nutrition education program aimed at optimizing patient health outcomes.

As a Certified Diabetes Care and Education Specialist (CDCES), the Outpatient Dietitian will also offer diabetes self-management education and training to individuals and groups in an outpatient context, adhering to the standards of practice and professional performance for Diabetes Educators.

This position is aligned with specific cost centers, programs, or projects to deliver nutrition services that comply with established standards and regulatory requirements.

Collaboration with management and relevant staff is crucial to enhance the reputation of Hackensack Meridian Health as a leading authority in Nutrition.

Key Responsibilities

A typical day for an Outpatient Dietitian - Diabetes at Hackensack Meridian Health includes:

1. Assessing patients' nutritional requirements and existing health plans to formulate and implement effective nutrition care plans and educational strategies.


2. Collaborating with physicians and healthcare professionals to evaluate health, environmental, and cultural factors that may impact patients' nutritional needs and education.


3. Developing tailored dietary recommendations for individuals and groups to manage chronic health conditions such as diabetes, cardiovascular diseases, hypertension, and obesity.


4. Educating patients and their families on nutritional principles, dietary plans, modifications, and healthy food choices based on their medical history and diagnoses.


5. Guiding patients and their families on the appropriate use of nutritional supplements and other products for managing chronic diseases.

6. Coordinating nutrition counseling services.


7. Planning and conducting training programs in dietetics, nutrition, and institutional management for staff, healthcare personnel, and the general public.

8. Designing appropriate interventions and following up with patients.


9. Utilizing validated resources from the internet and print to enhance services and propose new initiatives related to nutrition, ensuring the organization remains at the forefront of the field.

10. Acting as a public relations representative and media spokesperson for nutrition-related topics.

11. Serving as a nutrition expert consultant for various medical center programs.

12. Monitoring and evaluating the effectiveness of nutrition education and training initiatives.

13. Implementing performance improvement strategies based on program outcome reviews.

14. Assisting with program development and marketing efforts.

15. Traveling within the medical center campus and/or off-site locations as necessary.

16. Mentoring Dietetic Interns and Students.

17. Performing other duties and projects as assigned.

18. Adhering to organizational competencies and standards of behavior.

Qualifications

Required Education, Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:


• Bachelor's Degree in Nutrition or an equivalent field that meets the Commission on Dietetic Registration education requirements for certification (Registered Dietitian Nutritionist).

• Minimum of 2 years of experience in one-on-one and group nutrition counseling.


• Comprehensive understanding of medical nutrition therapy principles, chronic health condition management, and related services.

• Demonstrated interest in community medicine.

• Ability to connect with and educate patients from diverse cultural backgrounds.

• Flexibility to work varying hours, including evenings, and facilitate seminars/classes and support groups.

• Willingness to provide counseling during evening hours as needed.

• Capability to work effectively under pressure by prioritizing tasks and adjusting deadlines.

• Skill in providing constructive feedback during patient and staff education.

• Positive attitude in adapting to changing conditions.

• Strong organizational skills and reliability.

• Excellent written and verbal communication skills to engage effectively with individuals at all organizational levels.

• Ability to work independently under general supervision while maintaining a professional demeanor.

• Proficiency in computer applications, including Microsoft Office and/or Google Suite platforms.

Preferred Education, Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:


• Master's degree in nutrition, dietetics, or a related field from an accredited institution, fulfilling the didactic requirements of the American Dietetic Association.

• At least 2 years of experience in acute care clinical settings.

• Familiarity with HealthTouch and EPIC systems.

• Experience and comfort with public speaking engagements.

• Bilingual proficiency in English and Spanish.

Licenses and Certifications Required:


• Current registration with the Commission on Dietetic Registration (CDR) and maintenance of 75 continuing education credits every 5 years in nutrition counseling and medical nutrition therapy.

• Certification by the National Certification Board of Diabetes Educators.
