Senior Mechanical Engineer - CPS/Comtech

Location: Office-based position with no remote work options.

Schedule: 9/80 work schedule with every other Friday off.

Overview: We are seeking a dedicated and experienced Senior Mechanical Engineer to contribute to a groundbreaking project focused on the design and construction of an innovative waste treatment and immobilization facility. This initiative aims to convert hazardous waste into a safe form for disposal, playing a crucial role in environmental conservation and community health.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Direct the design and evaluation of mechanical systems involved in fluid and gas management within the waste treatment operations.
  • Develop comprehensive technical documentation, including feasibility studies, design calculations, and equipment specifications.
  • Ensure that all designs comply with nuclear safety and operational standards.
  • Collaborate with various engineering disciplines to achieve cohesive system solutions.
  • Address technical challenges and deliver solutions that meet regulatory compliance and quality benchmarks.
  • Engage in safety assessments and hazard evaluations.
  • Supervise the execution of designs, ensuring compliance with plans and specifications throughout the commissioning phase.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree in Mechanical, Nuclear, or Chemical Engineering from an accredited institution.
  • A minimum of 9 years of relevant experience, including expertise in Piping and Instrument Diagrams (P&ID) and system design.
  • Familiarity with quality assurance standards such as ASME-NQA-1, MIL-Q-9858A, or ISO-9000.
  • Strong knowledge of applicable industry and regulatory standards (e.g., ASME B31.3, ASME AG-1).
  • Exceptional verbal and written communication abilities.
  • Ability to pass a pre-employment drug screening and background investigation.
  • Eligibility to obtain a Department of Energy badge for site access.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Professional engineering licensure.
  • Experience in designing fluid systems for Department of Energy or commercial nuclear facilities.

Technical Screening Questions:

  1. Can you describe a complex mechanical system design project you led? What were the key challenges, and how did you address them?
  2. How do you ensure compliance with nuclear safety and environmental regulations during the design process?
  3. What experience do you have with developing P&IDs and equipment specifications for high-risk or heavily regulated environments?
  4. Describe your experience with quality assurance programs. Which standards are you most familiar with, and how have you implemented them in past projects?
  5. How do you manage cross-disciplinary coordination in a project setting to ensure that mechanical designs integrate well with other systems?
  6. Explain a scenario where you had to troubleshoot a significant issue during the commissioning phase of a project. What steps did you take to resolve it?
  7. What software tools do you use for mechanical design and analysis, and how proficient are you with them?
  8. Have you ever managed a project where you had to adapt the design due to unexpected changes or challenges? How did you handle it?
