This position has been crafted to outline the general nature and level of responsibilities undertaken by employees in this role. It is not intended to serve as a comprehensive list of all duties, responsibilities, and qualifications that may be required of the employee assigned to this position. The specifics of the job may vary depending on the facility's size and needs. Receipt of this job description does not imply or create a promise of employment, nor does it constitute an employment contract of any kind; employment with East Ohio LLC is at-will.
Role of the Physical TherapistPhysical Therapists (PTs) deliver a range of medical services aimed at assisting individuals who have suffered injuries or are physically impacted by illness to regain or enhance their functional capabilities. A physical therapist must assess a patient's condition and create a tailored rehabilitation and treatment plan. The primary objective of the PT is to develop, maintain, and restore optimal movement and functional ability, thereby enhancing the patient's quality of life.
Key ResponsibilitiesPhysical Therapists provide patient care grounded in the application of scientific principles of physical therapy. Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
- Designing and implementing medically prescribed physical therapy treatments for patients experiencing injuries or disorders related to muscles, nerves, joints, and bones, with the aim of restoring function, alleviating pain, and preventing disability.
- Reviewing physician referrals and patient medical records to ascertain necessary physical therapy interventions.
- Conducting assessments of patients' strength, motor skills, sensory perception, functional capacity, and respiratory and circulatory efficiency, and documenting findings to formulate or adjust treatment plans.
- Creating written treatment programs based on comprehensive evaluations of patient data.
- Administering manual exercises to enhance and sustain functional abilities.
- Guiding, motivating, and assisting patients in performing various physical activities, including non-manual exercises, mobility tasks, daily living activities, and the use of assistive devices such as crutches and canes.
- Delivering treatments that involve the application of physical agents, utilizing equipment such as electrical stimulation devices, moist heat packs, cold packs, ultraviolet and infrared lamps, and ultrasound machines.
- Evaluating treatment outcomes at various stages and modifying interventions to achieve optimal results.
- Providing massage therapy.
- Administering traction to alleviate discomfort.
- Documenting treatment procedures, patient responses, and progress in patient records or electronic systems.
- Educating patients and their families on treatment procedures to be continued at home.
- Collaborating with physicians and other healthcare professionals to gather additional patient information, recommend modifications to treatment plans, and integrate physical therapy with other aspects of patient care.
- Training and supervising the work of assistants and aides.
- Performing other related duties as assigned, depending on the specific setting.
- Complete mandatory orientation as directed by the facility.
- Adhere to facility and OSHA safety regulations while on duty.
- Follow facility protocols and policies.
- Respect the cultural and religious practices of patients.
- Uphold HIPAA regulations.
- Demonstrate punctuality and reliability for assigned shifts.
- Graduation from an accredited Physical Therapy program.
- Current PT license in good standing with the State licensing board.
- Cognitive skills relevant to the position.
Evening and weekend shifts may be necessary to accommodate patient schedules. The role is physically demanding, requiring Physical Therapists to stand for extended periods and engage in activities such as stooping, kneeling, and crouching. PTs may need to move heavy equipment and assist with patient transfers and mobility. To prevent back injuries, adherence to proper body mechanics and lifting procedures is essential. Those working in sub-acute or long-term care settings may find the physical demands more intense compared to those in outpatient environments.
Physical RequirementsAbility to lift up to fifty (50) pounds. Moving, lifting, or transferring patients may require lifting up to 100 pounds. The role necessitates standing for prolonged periods, possessing fine motor skills, and having visual acuity. The physical demands outlined here represent the requirements that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform essential functions. While executing job duties, employees are regularly required to stand and communicate effectively. They frequently walk and reach forward with hands and arms, and occasionally sit, stoop, kneel, or crouch. Employees must frequently lift and/or move up to 50 pounds. Specific vision abilities required for this position include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus. The overall physical demand rating for a Physical Therapist is classified as Medium according to the Dictionary of Occupational Titles, but due to the nature of the patient population in contracted facilities, this position is classified as Heavy, requiring exertion of 50 to 100 pounds of force occasionally, and/or 20 to 50 pounds of force frequently, and/or 10 to 20 pounds of force constantly to move objects.
