Position Overview
The primary objective of this role is to oversee the daily nursing operations within the facility during your assigned shift.
This oversight must align with existing federal, state, and local standards, guidelines, and regulations governing our facility, as well as directives from the Director of Nursing Services, to guarantee the highest quality of care is consistently delivered.
Authority Delegation
As the Nurse Supervisor, you are entrusted with the administrative authority, responsibility, and accountability essential for executing your designated tasks.
Key Responsibilities

Administrative Duties
- Assist the Director of Nursing Services in managing the daily nursing activities in compliance with current regulations and guidelines.
- Contribute to the development, maintenance, and revision of written policies and procedures that govern nursing operations.
- Ensure that reference materials at nursing stations are up-to-date and recommend resources that support the nursing department's operational needs.
- Maintain the Nursing Service Procedures Manual to reflect current practices within the facility.
- Ensure compliance with the procedures outlined in the Nursing Service Procedures Manual by all nursing personnel.
- Prepare written and oral reports or recommendations for the Director regarding nursing department operations.
- Review departmental policies and job descriptions periodically and suggest revisions to the Director.
- Facilitate coordination of nursing services with other resident services to ensure comprehensive care.
- Ensure adherence to job descriptions by all nursing staff.
- Engage in the development and implementation of the facility's quality assurance program for nursing services.
- Participate in facility inspections conducted by authorized government agencies as directed.
- Review and update residents' discharge plans as necessary.
- Assist in planning nursing services for residents' discharge plans as needed.
- Conduct meetings with nursing and support staff to plan departmental services and activities.
- Manage resident admissions, transfers, and discharges as required.
- Complete necessary incident reports.
- Interpret departmental policies and procedures to staff, residents, visitors, and regulatory agencies as needed.
- Perform administrative tasks such as completing medical forms, reports, and evaluations as necessary.
Committee Participation
- Attend various facility committee meetings (e.g., Infection Control, Policy Advisory, Quality Assessment) as required.
- Assist in preparing reports on nursing service programs and activities for submission to committees as directed.
- Provide information to the Quality Assurance Committee as requested.
- Participate in agenda development for Care Plan Committee meetings as necessary.
- Engage in regular reviews of discharge plans and make them available to the Care Plan Committee as required.
- Implement recommendations from established committees as directed by the Director.
Personnel Management
- Ensure adequate staffing of licensed practical and registered nurses during your shift to maintain quality care.
- Ensure sufficient availability of nursing assistants to meet daily care needs.
- Develop work assignments and assist in task completion.
- Delegate necessary authority and responsibility to LPNs and RNs for their assigned duties.
- Ensure nurse aide trainees are supervised by a licensed nurse.
- Conduct daily rounds to ensure nursing staff are fulfilling their assignments per acceptable standards.
- Monitor absenteeism to maintain adequate staffing levels and report issues to the Director.
- Ensure compliance with established policies, including dress codes, by all staff.
- Address complaints and grievances from department personnel and report findings to the Director.
- Foster positive working relationships with inter-departmental personnel to ensure effective nursing services.
- Create a warm and supportive environment throughout the unit.
- Hold regular meetings with your shift to identify and address issues and improve services.
- Evaluate departmental workforce and recommend changes to the Director.
- Participate in employee performance evaluations and staffing assessments, making recommendations regarding personnel changes.
- Ensure fair administration of disciplinary actions in accordance with applicable laws.
- Report occupational exposures to hazardous materials as per facility policies.
Nursing Care Responsibilities
- Inform nursing staff of new admissions, their expected arrival times, and room assignments.
- Ensure readiness of rooms for new residents.
- Welcome newly admitted residents and assist them to their rooms as needed.
- Accompany physicians during rounds as necessary.
- Encourage timely documentation by attending physicians.
- Consult with residents, families, and physicians in planning care and treatment.
- Notify the attending physician and family of any changes in a resident's condition.
- Conduct daily visits to residents to assess their physical and emotional well-being.
- Ensure that nursing care is provided by qualified personnel.
- Review nursing notes for accuracy and compliance with resident preferences.
- Provide direct nursing care as necessary.
- Perform necessary medical procedures and assessments.
- Report issues to the Director and assist in corrective actions.
- Keep the Director informed of resident statuses and related matters.
- Assist in monitoring critically ill residents.
- Authorize the use of restraints when necessary, following facility policies.
- Ensure compliance with medication administration procedures by nursing staff.
- Monitor medication schedules to ensure adherence to orders.
- Inspect treatment areas for cleanliness and safety.
- Ensure frequent checks on residents who cannot call for assistance.
- Meet with residents and families as necessary and report concerns to the Director.
- Assist in arranging transportation for discharged residents.
- Notify family members in the event of a resident's passing.
Staff Development
- Participate in developing and conducting in-service training programs for nursing staff.
- Implement an effective orientation program for new employees.
- Provide leadership training for LPNs and RNs.
- Encourage participation in external training programs.
- Assist in revising the nursing assistant training curriculum.
- Support clinical supervision for nurse aide trainees.
- Contribute to annual in-service training programs on relevant topics.
- Assist in developing community training programs on advance directives.
- Collaborate with support services to develop relevant training programs.
- Ensure nursing staff meet continuing education requirements for licensure.
- Engage in continuing education to stay updated in the field.
Safety and Sanitation Responsibilities
- Assist in establishing safety standards for nursing services.
- Identify and evaluate tasks with potential exposure to hazardous materials.

- Maintain adequate supplies of personal protective equipment.
- Ensure compliance with safety procedures for equipment and supplies.
