As a key member of our staff, you will be responsible for developing and maintaining trusting relationships with guests, ensuring a safe and secure environment, and providing exceptional customer service.

Key Responsibilities
  • Build and maintain relationships with guests, providing referrals to appropriate services and monitoring their well-being
  • Enhance skills and stay informed of current research and best practices in empowering individuals struggling with homelessness through ongoing educational opportunities and training
  • Monitor general needs of full-time staff and assist with tasks as needed
  • Help maintain a clean, sanitized, and orderly environment
  • Protect property and staff by maintaining a safe and secure environment
  • Escorting and removing suspended guests from the property using trauma-informed care
  • Filling out incident reports and suspension logs
  • Reporting suspicious incidents to the director or full-time staff
  • Patrolling the area, picking up trash, and checking entrances
  • Assisting in monitoring access to the building
  • Calling 911 in the event of an emergency
Requirements
  • High School diploma; Associates Degree in Social Work or Human Services preferred
  • Specific training and experience with current technology (e.g., Word, Excel, PowerPoint)
  • Must be at least 18 years of age
  • Must have a valid driver's license
  • Must be able to pass Catholic Charities background check
  • Must maintain a neat and professional appearance
  • Ability to provide quality customer service
  • Ability to maintain satisfactory attendance and punctuality standards
  • Excellent knowledge of public safety and security procedures/protocols
Preferred Qualifications
  • Working with people who have mental health and substance abuse issues
  • Experience with homelessness services a plus
  • Proven 1-2 years of work experience as a security guard or in a relevant position
  • Must have experience working in a high-pressure work environment with a high volume of guest interactions
Skills
  • Friendly, welcoming, empathic, tolerant, and passionate about helping others succeed
  • Ability to adapt quickly to an ever-changing environment through the use of critical thinking and professional judgment
  • Ability to work autonomously
  • Knowledge of Dane County/Madison resources for people who are homeless
  • Ability to operate emergency equipment
  • Must possess excellent listening, oral communication, and interpersonal skills with the ability to deal with all levels of personnel and guests in a professional manner
  • Must be able to frequently prepare written reports and logs in neat, legible handwriting (may require computer skills)
  • Must be able to read and understand all operating procedures and instructions
  • Ability to handle both common and crisis situations at The Beacon, calmly and efficiently
