As the largest municipal water and wastewater utility in the United States, we serve approximately 8.5 million residents in New York City and over 1 million individuals in Upstate New York, delivering an impressive 1.1 billion gallons of potable water daily while managing an average of 1.3 billion gallons of wastewater.
Departmental Focus
The Bureau of Wastewater Treatment oversees the operation and maintenance of facilities integral to sewage treatment, which includes wastewater treatment plants, pumping stations, and laboratories. This role is crucial in ensuring compliance with environmental standards and the efficient functioning of our systems.
Role Responsibilities
Under general supervision, the selected candidate will engage in environmental engineering tasks that require moderate expertise and responsibility, both in office settings and fieldwork. The role will provide opportunities for professional development in engineering practices.
Key Duties Include:
- Monitoring compliance with wastewater treatment plant discharge permits and ensuring timely compilation and distribution of treatment reports.
- Addressing inquiries related to treatment processes and generating specialized reports on plant performance.
- Offering expert consultation on treatment plant challenges, laboratory data interpretation, and operational methodologies.
- Conducting research and investigations pertinent to the environmental engineering functions of the department.
- Operating a motor vehicle as necessary to fulfill assigned responsibilities.
Qualifications
- A bachelor's degree in environmental, chemical, mechanical, petroleum, aeronautical, or materials engineering from an accredited institution, accompanied by one year of relevant professional experience; or
- A bachelor's degree in the aforementioned fields along with a master's degree in environmental engineering from an accredited college.
Note: A master's degree in environmental engineering may substitute for one year of full-time relevant experience.
